30pn no sound in Cine V

No sound in REC FORMAT 720P/30PN when in SCENE F5:CINE V and OPERATION TYPE set FILM CAM. But seem to get sound in alll other REC FORMATS including 720P/30P.

The SCENE FILE menu FRAME RATE is automatically set at 24FRAME. So when I change that to 30FRAME the sound works. That only seems to be a sound issue using REC FORMAT 720/30PN in FILM CAM...but works just fine in 720/30P.

I did notice that some of the SCENE FILE dial gammas automatically force "DEFAULT" into the FRAME RATE. Just not for 720/30PN in CINE V or CINE D.

It does not appear to be a problem with 720/30P or any other FRAME RATE.

My objective is to shoot a video for DVD or TV Broadcast. Wanted the smoother film cam look.

Should I just manually change the frame rate to 30FRAME or change the OPERATION TYPE to VIDEO CAM?

(haven't yet considered the FCP ingest issues the choice makes)

Anytime you undercrank or overcrank (i.e. 24frames in 30PN) than no sound is record. Any frame rate other than 30fps will not record sound in 30PN. Same will happen in 24PN with any frame rate other than 24fps

None of the gammas force specific framerates. It may be that your particular scene files are set to a DEFAULT framerate so that the recording framerate always matches the recording format.

I have only one scene file in all four scene file sets that does not use DEFAULT for the framerate, and that is one I use for overcranking.

It would seem that all the frame rates would defaut to match the recording frame rate selected...then force me to make a conscious decision on over/undercranking.

Apparently, the HVX assumes that I will understand and take care of that manually.

The wierd part is that it happens only on the PN. You would think that there would still be an issue if I selected REC FORMAT 30P, because the frame rate still is 24FRAME and the sound records.

When I switch to VIDEO CAM, the default does automatically switch to 30FRAME RATE. Just not in FILM CAM.

What you're describing is the reason why the DEFAULT frame rate option exists. If you set your frame rate to DEFAULT then it'll adjust automatically to 60p, 30p, or 24p. It's when you manually change away from DEFAULT and force a specific frame rate (such as 24p, when shooting 30pN) that the no-sound issue arises.

Thank guys.

I'm sure the discovery process is just beginning on using 30p.

I've only worked with 720/24 (pand pN and pA). (not much 1080)

The 30p is just because the end target is DVD/TV/internet.

Can't wait until FCP throws more rocks in my pack.

Why would you change to 30p for DVD, TV, or internet? 24P works fantastic for DVD and Internet, and if you insert pulldown it works great for TV (as witnessed by every hollywood film broadcast on TV). I guess what I'm saying is: if you like 24P, stick with it, it's totally appropriate for all those markets.

I'm quite comfortable with 24p...and I'm not sure what advantage or disadvantage there is to shooting 30p...but the master project (which I did not spec) is in 30p.

In the mean time I get to figure out 30p in the broadcast world. Any suggestions? (actually, I'm pretty excited to get to put some stuff on TV)
