30p vs 60i

Hey guys, just a quick question regarding these two. 30p's image looks more "stuttery" (for lack of a better word) that is similar to 24p. Right now I want to shoot 720p30 and downconvert it to SD NTSC but also keep the HD footage for future use. My clients require the "video look" that they're already used to (Dv) so I was thinking that either I'd use DVCPRO50 60i or 720p30...60i eats more space than 720p30 so that would be another benefit to use 720p30. So I guess my real question is how do I get 30p to look like 60i? If I edit/composite the 30p footage in a 60i comp (or project) will it be ok?

You can't. Use 720/60P or 1080/60i if you want both an HD version and a perfectly "video" SD downconversion. Personally I'd go with 720/60P.

30p is 30 frames per second 60i is 30 frames per second on the bottom and 30 on top. Each frame is interlaced in 60i so when you take a still frame the horizontal axis is screwy. So 30p is basically true 30 frames per second. No point in shooting 60i.

there is a point in shooting 60i. it looks like 60i or the "video" look. 30p looks more like film, less lifelike and more cinematic.

No point in shooting 60i.

60i footage is sampled twice as often and therefore has twice the temporal information of 30p, so there is a very valid point to shooting interlaced in situations where fast action or smoother motion is preferred.

I do prefer the perceived increase in resolution, simpler workflow and overall look of progressive frames, but interlaced video has it's uses as well, and they are not interchangeable.
