30P+Twixtor=60P footage/timeline? What about NTSC?

I posted this question somewhere else but didnt get a answer plus it may have been too far off subject so I posted it here. When doing slo mo you loose rez when you play back 60i @ 50%. On the other hand you get jumpy footage if you slow 30P down by 50%. This is well understood but...

Could you get what "60P" MIGHT look like (I know its not a regular format) if you used Twixtor on 30P footage to create inbetween frames making it 60 progressive frames? If so, can it be seen in that format under NTSC/DVD standards? If its not and its forced to change to 60i do you gain anything by going thru the process v.s. shooting 60i in the first place?

DVD's can't play 60P. The only way you could actually see it would be through a device that plays back 60P. If you encoded it as a 60P MPEG-2 transport stream, you could play it back through an HDV camcorder, they support 60P format.

But: no. Not really. Because each of your 60i frames is going to have to be de-interlaced to make a 60P-looking frame, and that's going to cost you resolution.

If you want to see what 60p looks like, get ahold of a JVC HD1 or HD10, and shoot in the "SD" mode... that's 720x480x60P.

Thanks Barry!

Hey what can you tell me about 1080P? I hear the format is used for film telecines to master. Yet under the NTSC format 1080 can only be shown interlaced and not progressively. What kind of deck are they using to record and play to for 1080P then? Also what is the advantage of 1080P if forced to make (at best) a 1080i footage out of it in the end for distribution?

(I should add to the 60P thing above) that you can't ever display it on an NTSC TV. NTSC TV's show 60i, so 60P would have to be downconverted to 60i. The only place you can see 60P is on an HDTV (or maybe a computer screen).

Okay, 1080P: The ATSC television standards for high-def do include 1080/24P. NTSC has no provision for any sort of progressive playback, but high-def includes 1080/24P and I think it includes 1080/25p and 1080/30p (not sure about 30p). HDV doesn't include the option for 1080 progressive, but the ATSC HD standards do.

And, the advantage of 1080p when releasing on 1080i is the same as the DVX: shooting 24P but releasing on 60i video, it still retains the 24P look.

Thanks again. I'll have to look into the various commercial HD-DVD formats out there (available now and in the near future) and see if they support 1080 24P.
