30P to 24P conversion

Hello

I am shooting a concert with 3 DVXs and 1 GL1. The GL1 will be a wide shot - without panning / tilting.

Would it be better to shoot 30i or 30p with the GL1 if I will be editing the project in 24PA?

Thanks

Re: 30P to 24P conversion

What will you be editing in? From what I understand, FCP doesn't allow different frame rates on the same timeline, but Vegas does, so that may be an issue -- if using FCP, you may want to edit the program as a 60i program.

I'd say that if you're doing a 60i edit, I'd probably vote for the whole project to be shot in 30P and frame mode. That way the GL1 will "fit in" the best. If you want to go with 24P, you'll probably get a better match from frame mode in the Gl1, or you could use DVFilm Maker to convert the GL1 footage to a 24P simulation.

But if at all possible, run some tests first. You really need to see what it'll *really* look like before you can knowledgeably commit.

Re: 30P to 24P conversion

Ill be editing in vegas. I dont have any time to do tests but... the GL1 is going to be pretty much a stationary wide shot. So any motion problems hopefully will be minimal. I'll see how DVFilm Maker performs. I just figured shooting 30P vs 30i would blend better with the 24p footage.

Thanks!

Re: 30P to 24P conversion

I would shoot the DVX's in 30p and the Gl1 in frame mode, even though a wide shot from the GL1 will stick out like a sore thumb, if you are only using a wide shot. The gl1's wide shots are considerably soft and not much can be seen clearly with detail, however the motion rendition will be the same as the DVX.

If you are really set on using 24p then shot 60i with the gl1 and convert it to 24p (but then again the footage will loose substantial resolution and sharpness.)

I would almost consider using the gl1 as a medium to closeup, unless you are only going to use the wide shoots very infrequently during the actual finished product.

Either way using it as a fourth camcorder should increase the production value if you do a good job trying to mask the resolution problems, the color should match fairly decent if the gamma settings and colors are played with on the DVX's.

Good Luck!

What band are you shooting? Anyone familiar?
