30p Problem

I don't know if this is normal or if it is something wrong with my camera, but when I switch progressive modes to 30p, the image is really dark and noisy compared to all other progressive modes. I have to turn the gain to +6dB and have the iris open and ND off in bright daylight to get a semi-normal picture. The detail is pretty much gone even then because the iris is open, but the brightness and contrast are adequate like that. WTF is going on? It didn't always do this... I have never dropped my camera or hit it hard on accident before so there shouldn't be anything wrong with the inside. I always protect it when I am going somewhere.:violent5::badputer::Drogar-Thinking(DBG

No, it should not be doing that. 30p is just a progressive frame rate and doesn't affect the image other than the motion. Try resetting the scene file to default, if you haven't already, and see what it does.

But it's every scene file... How do you reset the scene files? Do you have to re-set all the settings if you reset the scene files?

At the end of every scene file setting is a save option to save any changes in your scene file settings. One of the options is INIT. INIT returns the scene file setting to factory specs. If you want to reset everything to factory specs and start from scratch, there is a tiny hole in the housing behind the LCD marked "reset." Insert a pin or something similar into the hole to press the reset switch and the camera should return to its original factory settings.

True, but the change in exposure is relatively small and easily compensated for, not as drastic as Andy describes.

There will be a drastic change if you have your shutter set to "on" and on your 30p scene file you have chosen something like 1/500 or 1/1000th speed. The camera saves this information until you manually change it.

On a DVX, 60i is twice as bright and half as noisy as 30p. That's just the way it is, because of the way the chipset works. When you scan in progressive scan, it does one pass down the chip, progressively, top to bottom. When you scan in 60i, it scans the chip twice, and sums the scans together -- this gives you twice the light sensitivity, and half the noise, because the noise gets averaged together between the two scans.

At any given shutter speed, 60i will be twice as bright as 30p.

Doesn't work that way on an all-progressive cam like the HVX or HPX300/500, etc., but on a progressive/interlaced camera (like the DVX, or the EX1), you gain a stop of sensitivity by going to 60i.

The way I understand Andy's original post, 60i is not a factor. He is talking about switching between progressive modes, i.e. 24p to 30p.

Yes. Most of my scene file settings are set to 24pA but for my "filmic look" scene file, I wanted to use 30p for a shoot and as I described, it was Very dark... I guess I will call the camera store tomorrow... Thanks for all your help.
