30P looks great!  Am I missing something?

I recently wrapped on a television show that was shooting in 30P with a 1/60 shutter and It looked great. Ran a few tests, and maybe I'm crazy but I think it looked great. It had all the filmlook of 24P, but, of course, slightly smoother motion. The colors seemed richer -- whereas 24P feels like 16mm this feels like 35mm (within reason, of course) How come more people don't talk about this as a great midground alternative between 24p and video? Am I missing something?

30p is great. Considerably less strobiness than 24p, yet full resolution and less of the "real life" aesthetic that 60i has.

But:

It does NOT have richer colors. The 24p scene file setting has chroma levels turned down a bit, I believe, so that's the only reason colors would seem richer. You can crank chroma way up, underexpose, and use different color matrices to get rich colors regardless of what frame rate you shoot in.

Also, you can't transfer 30p to film or broadcast it in the UK.

And I still think properly shot 24p looks better than properly shot 30p, though improperly shot 24p looks horrible whereas you can shoot 30p without worrying too much about how fast you pan or tilt. 30p is definitely a very solid option, though, and many people prefer it. I think it looks great.

I agree with you Tibent,
I really like using 30p the best, but Policar is right, properly shot 24p looks amazing. My only problem is that most of my projects don't allow for me to properly set up and control everything. This past summer I shot a documentary following a group all around New York, and I found 30p was the perfect look for my project. The unpredictablility of the nature of this project would've caused all kinds of strobing for me... The DVrig Pro also helped tremendously!

Ditto on all the same points above. Also 30P looks pretty damn good slowed down 50%. Where as 24p has the interlace frames that show up at that speed. Looks real choppy. You could remove the pulldown and it will look better but still not as good as 30p. 60i is even smoother than 30p when it comes to slow mo BUT only 30p will look like film both slowed down and at regular speed and its also the only one that will have turn progressive frames thru out. If you asked me...

Shooting live events or film-like documentaries? 30p.
Shooting a film with multiple takes? 24pa
Shooting for a real, unscripted feel? 60i

You know some film DPs purposely shoot 30fps instead of the traditional 24fps when shooting 35mm if they know they are ONLY going to TV or DVD. You dont have to worry about interlaced frames and get the highest clarity when it comes to motion.

30P is very much under rated

Regarding 30P - sometimes I feel like I'm seeing more aliasing on horizontal lines in 30P (fine lines pulsating) I was using a 1/60th shutter. Could that be true of 30P vs 24P? I was also shooting in F5 thick.

Yep. We just shot a TV a couple of weeks ago and the DP shot at 30 (35mm shoot) as we're only going to TV. Sadly, they would not allow me (the writer) to keep an Arri as a souvenir.

I'll have to mess around with 30p after reading this thread.
