30p footage for possible film or HDcam transfer

OK, I've spent hours researching this topic on boards and I know it's been discussed but I'm still confused.

I am shooting a documentary and much of the historical footage I'll be using was shot in 30p. (Canon "frame mode" and DVX100a at 30p.)

I'd like options open for a possible transfer to HDcam or film for festival screenings, but I've read that 30p poses problems for film transfer. (Is that true for transfer to HDcam or other digital projection methods?)

My question is, should I shoot all new footage in 30p, or should I somehow convert what I have and work in 24p or 60i?

And how does 24p or 30p footage relate to a 29.97fps timeline in FCP?

Thanks for any help!

I think that if you wanted to blow out to 35mm you had to shoot 24Pa but I'm very not sure because I've never done it before. I'm sure manny persons will be able to answer you question more technically.

Transferring 30p to film is not going to be pretty. Not at all. I've seen it done (XL1 frame mode) and it was nauseating. Maybe the technology is better now, but I'd doubt it.

However, an HDCAM projection wouldn't have to be 24p -- you should be able to project HDCAM from a 30psf HDCAM tape. So you probably aren't hosed, unless you really really really need a film transfer. If you do, you're somewhat hosed and probably entirely hosed. But if you don't absolutely need film, if you can get by on HDCAM, then you're probably ok. Check with the festivals to see if 30p HDCAM would be acceptable, although I can't fathom why it wouldn't be.
