30P cannot be converted to PAL but 24P can?

I talked to a guy who does conversions and he told me this. True?

So only shoot 24P or 24PA if converting to PAL?

30p probably can be converted to PAL but it would be incredibly difficult. I think most people refuse to do such a conversion, though. 30fps to 25fps is not easy.

24fps to 25fps is easy, though. The footage is merely sped up 4%.

Well, anything technically *can* be converted to PAL...the question is about how good it will look.

Speed changing 24P to 25P is quite unnoticeable, and a very acceptable way of changing frame rates. Going from 30P, you'd have to drop frames, which results in very choppy looking footage.

That's why IMO 24P is the best frame rate to shoot in - it's the most universal, can be shown almost anywhere!

That not only doesn't convert NTSC to PAL (it says the new version will), it would probably do 60i to 50i or 25p. 30p to 25p is a REALLY hard conversion.

You might find out you're incorrect about your assumptions.

I think Policar's right on the money. First, he can't use it, because the version that converts NTSC to PAL doesn't exist yet. Second, DVFilm is one of the sites that flat out says don't shoot on the JVC HD camera, because it shoots 30P and that cannot be converted to film's 24P.

Here's the quote from their site:

The JVC's 16:9 HDTV (720p30) format is 30 frames/sec progressive-scan and cannot be converted to 24 frames/sec. (Normal interlaced NTSC is 60 fields/sec and is easily converted to 24, but 30P formats have only 30 motion samples per second and no smooth conversion to 24 is possible).

If Marcus is going to say he cannot convert 30P to 24P, it's a reasonable assumption to say that Atlantis won't be able to convert 30P to 24P.
