Hi

I have been asked to put some of my work on a DVD

Im guessing this would be 720p 25p for a uk DVD

I have my FCP and tried export using compressor with best motion compensation

26 hours for 1.5mins of footy and sound

I did another clip that I had already had done the 25p conversion on and it seemed far far quicker (even considering the initial conversion)

Does the userbase here thing that there are ways to save time..

eg

convert 1080 30p to 1080 25p then convert 1080 25p to 720 25p for instance

Never guess.

A DVD will not take a 720p movie.

Because..?

Too much info (my 'movie' actually is not movie length- about 5 mins)

or

Wrong format

------

Anyway I picked the top one from the list of options on FCP and it worked

Watching 5d footy on my mrs sony CRT television for first time looked awesomly as good or better than as broadcast stuff on the same television even though it was a retime from 30 - 25

Saturation was higher - ill need to get a 'proper' monitor to grade on for this type of final delivery

Really it looked so good Im amazed and cant see why anyone would want better for anything but cinema display

Its defo good enough to blow the socks of the average corporate client !

DVD is a standard-def video format, and only standard-def. If you want your product to play on a regular DVD player, it must be standard-def MPEG-2.

OK SD not 720 , my error sorry, but my original question was about the speed of prepping to this format which requires two things

ReTiming and Downscaling

I did both in 'one hit' using compressor and it was very very slow using 'good' motion compensation

The question is would it be quicker to do a re-time followed by a downscale

or maybe a downscale followed by a retime (this sounds logical)

Or is there another approach completely

You have the footage, the software, the machine and know what you want.

So grab a short section of a few seconds and experiment - and then let us know what you find.

I was hoping to gain from someone elses pain !

Compressor testing is one of the least attractive activities on the planet

I will report back if I do such tests :)
