300w enough for outdoor shot?

Except that I wasn't shooting at night, and neither is the OP. The question is would a 1k do anything in an overcast outdoor situation during the day. That particular shoot was done shortly after it stopped raining and so the condition was completely overcast; the light was practically right up on the actor's face and it was like it wasn't even there. That's why I have real trouble believing that a 1k gelled light would do anything in an outdoor situation.
I'll have to review the photometrics but I've tried a CTB gelled 1K in deep shade during the day and gotten zip out of it until it was right on top of the actress.

I agree. Based on my experience (which you all humble I am sure) a 1K isn't going to much, let alone a 300W. We needed a fill on one shoot and we ended up using a 800W Joker through a silk, worked pretty well.
