30 second spot - 9/11

Wow, I have no idea where you are going with this but if that was a real commercial I'd puke.

Is that the point?

Perhaps something more detailed than 'I want to puke' would be helpful?

The spot made me want to puke. It's a fair response.

re-reading I can see how it sounded mean. That wasn't what I was trying to do. i don't like to be mean.

He said that this was a spot a character in his movie made. I gave him an honest response to what the spot made me feel.

I also gave the caveat that I didn't know where he was going with it and asked if my response was the one he was looking for.

Not trying to be mean spirited here. If he was trying to make a spot that would make a guy like me sick, he did a great job.

For all we know that is what he's trying to do.

Fair enough, you're right - and you bring up a very valid point.
I would be interested to hear a little bit about the context this would be used in.
If we're supposed to take this as a sincere spot then I don't think it works as intended.
If on the other hand it's supposed to come off in some sort of satirical "starship troopers" type way - then I could see it doing that.

Regardless, if the spot is supposed to play in the scene as a "real" national PSA, then I don't think the production value is up to snuff - to be honest. It doesn't look or feel like a spot I would see on TV - the camerawork and acting just aren't at that level to me.

Rook - sorry for my smartass reply.
I have to learn not to post before I've had some coffee.

If you are going to use 9/11 in anything. It needs to be without story to interrupt it. It's like a bad 80s commercial, but with newer camera equipment. I can see it being a good concept, but the execution was not that great at all.

And I agree with Luis Caffesse's comments above about context...But thereagain, I wouldnt like it because it would be mocking a tragic event in US history, so I wouldnt like it anyway.

Louis,

No appology needed. You've been a huge help to me on this forum with info and feedback. You could even call me names and I wouldn't hold it against you.

You're good in my books.

tripods are fairly cheap... hell, even the glidecam is around $300-$400.

Help stop the puking epidemic and invest.

glidecams arent any good unless you have an arm to put them on. Saying that is like saying "hey, frying pans are pretty cheap, but you really dont need the handle"

tripod, maybe, but the best thing to do is just work on your steady shooting. A shoulder mount type aparatus would help in your situation. And much cheaper than a frying pan without a handle.

not true, i own a glidecam and its turned my shots from "blairwitch" to something much much much more steady...a vest and arm is for the weak...

a steadicam is a tool, a good steady hand is a skill. a glidecam is unnecessary weight on your arm which will wear you out faster. An arm and vest isnt weakness, its realization that you cant hold a camera on a glidecam (or just handheld) for an hour of shooting without loosing stability.

i agree with everything, but is this kid doing an hour of shooting? By the look of what he is showing us, hes shooting on the go, not for hours on end, which the glidecam is (semi) good for.

okay you didn't read the top of this post...the person/character isn't a professional videographer/filmmaker/whatever...you're meeting him and he's a twenty something college kid. ah but that's not the point...then we go into this glidecam tirade...maybe you don't watch law&order...hmmm...and i'm going to venture and say that's a full suit steadicam...most times doesn't look too steady. also watch "rush hour 2" the scene where lee & carter run across the street to the hotel because they think a bomb just got dropped off...again not too steady...

however i'll admit the shots in the classroom didn't work out as planned, but it suits it's purpose for what's seen in the feature.

Actually - you never said that in your original post.
What you said was:

"this is a clip that we are using as a background clip/element in our feature. one of the main characters, the implication is he is a video editor and when we meet him this is what he is working on."

I assumed this character was a video editor by profession, meaning he was a 'professional' - which meant he'd be working on professional projects.
You didn't say anything about him being a 'college kid' or that he wasn't a 'professional videographer/filmmaker/whatever'

So we had to assume - and I guess we assumed wrong.
But then again, we weren't given all the information we needed.

it suits it's purpose for what's seen in the feature.

Can you tell us some more about the feature, and what the purpose of the clip is?
It would certainly help in understanding what you're doing - so that the feedback you get is actually useful to you. And I'm really curious as to why you chose a 9/11 themed PSA... what function does it serve in the feature?

maybe i should've just said that he was editing a video...

i posted a rough cut a few days ago...

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=45325

it's in the background...you'll see some of it and hear a part of it (music will be gone though)...of the scene mentioned in this post not the link i just provided.

and as for the vid in this post...fact...the day after 9/11. not only were there lines of people donating blood, but there were huge numbers of young males at various military recruiting offices across the United States...fact...how many cars are driving around with flags hanging on the window? how many flags are flying in places where they once were? have we forgotten? the message of the clip is what brought us together, should keep us together...let's not forget.

is the vid prominent in the feature? no. is that message a part of the feature? yes, it's about different people uniting for a common front.
