30 Sec Anti-drug thing

Rich Lee

I shoot Pirates.
hello all, this is my first post on this site. i frequent dvinfo.net mostly, but now that i am a proud owner of a dvx100a i thought i would check this site out. Lots of good info! anyway, here is a link to the first thing i have made with the dvx, it is in a bit of a rough state, but good enough for veiwing i think. Its ment to be a antidrug spot, but i have yet to put any sort of tagline at the the end. still some work to be done on the edit/vfx, but please comment on whatever u like.
Thanks for looking!

Re: 30 Sec Anti-drug thing

Wow! Impressive stuff. Great imagery, tight editing, and appropriately disturbing post effects.

You managed to powerfully convey in a few seconds what it took the movie "Requiem For a Dream" a torturous hour and a half to say ("Drugs are bad.")

Though I'm not a fan of anti-drug ads (or the "drug war") in general, since they're usually government propaganda, your spot is a terrific piece of work. :)

Hope to see more of your work in the future.

Re: 30 Sec Anti-drug thing

This is my first post and I still don't know much about making films, but for what it's worth I was thoroughly impressed/disturbed by this ad! Well done!

Might I ask what software you used and how you did that blur effect? Like I said, I'm new, so go easy ;D

Re: 30 Sec Anti-drug thing

AWESOME! How did you get the face to look so rotten in the beginning. What were the technical details?

Re: 30 Sec Anti-drug thing

Hey guys, thanks for checkin it out!

I did the blur effect with after effects by messing with mattes and motion blur settings. basicly cranking motion blur to the point where it just gets all wiggly.
For the rotten face, i took a still of the last shot into photoshop and painted images of decay and rotten flesh ontop of it till i got the look i wanted, then i brought it into after effects and did luma keys and different kinds of effects to make it dissolve away, i still have to work on this part to make it work a bit better, but the ground work is there.

Thanks again!

Re: 30 Sec Anti-drug thing

That was a completely disturbing and absolutely perfect anti-drug piece. Well done!

Re: 30 Sec Anti-drug thing

I love it. My next feature film that I am starting this summer actually has a lot to do with teens and drugs, so your video was amazingly inspiring. I hope to edit my movie like you edited your anti-drug ad

Re: 30 Sec Anti-drug thing

This hits home. Well done. Gritty; shocking; disturbing. I love it. If I dont see this **** on Mtv then they suck.

Re: 30 Sec Anti-drug thing

Rich,

I was in elementary school in the 1960s during the psychedelic era. We were shown anti-drug movies all the time. None of this "you need to make smart choices" stuff like today. Anyway, you're video took me back. All I can remember is that old stuff portrayed drug abuse so negatively and in such a freightful way that in my 44 years of life, I've never once been tempted to do drugs.

(I am, however, a Mountain Dew addict)

Re: 30 Sec Anti-drug thing

thanks for the comments so far guys, very encouraging!

magicdavek- interesting about how they did it then. funny how the times have changed. i vaguely remember seeing some 50s/60s ads on drugs, stds and nuclear weapons, and i do remember them being pretty harsh. now its all kinda "whatever" the ads go by and u think nothing of it, none of it sticks i dont think. i think the best stuff right now are SOME of the truth ads about cigeretts. anyway, i hope to do one about condoms next. then a anti-mountain dew spot that will scare your socks off, just u wait! Do u know of a place online where u can see some of those 60's ads?

Re: 30 Sec Anti-drug thing

WOW! That site rules! i cant believe i havnt seen it before, amazing! Im downloading "perversion for profit (part 1)" Anti-pornography film right now from the 60's! Thanks for the site info!

Re: 30 Sec Anti-drug thing

Hey Rich

I watched Precursor... thought it was great. I was wondering how you did the bomb at the very end. That looked amazing. Was it AE?

Please, details!

Ted

Re: 30 Sec Anti-drug thing

Precursor is amazing..wow!! Nice work! Was that shot on the DVX too? It looked so good. The color correction was fantastic. Nice work x 1000!

Re: 30 Sec Anti-drug thing

hey guys, glad u liked precursor! I shot it last summer on my old xl1s that i just recently sold, i loved that camera, took such great images. but then i got ahold of the dvx and was blown away! anyway, i did the bomb effect with a combination of after effects and softimage xsi. i took some stills of nukes and animated them in after effects. the last bomb was an animated after effects bomb enhanced with some 3d particals and stuff in xsi. i plan on redoing some of the effects to look a little better, get them tracked into the shots better, so that i can enter it into some festivals.
