Hi all! Just thought I'd share a few Music Videos that I worked on for the Pink Martini Music Video Competition. Two animated and one doc. Enjoy!

"Over the Valley" is by far the most effective of the three. It has an interesting flow and the story moves well with the music. Watch for things like the goose that are supposed to ease into frame but suddenly appear instead. The jellyfish did this well, the goose was a little startling.

"Ohayoo Ohio" has potential. I like the art design, but there are too many elements that should be animated to the beat and/or instrumentation/voicing. The horn, the backing vocals... those things are distracting since they don't actually flow with the voices they visualize. Even things like the leaves and bushes swaying could be improved if timed to the music. And the editing pace doesn't flow with the song, either.

The live-action one... really didn't do anything for me at all. Lots of edits that really qualify as jump cuts, but don't go anywhere. Not much contrast in the edits. And I have no idea who those people are, why they are there, or what they are doing. The camera jumps all over the place and it's hard to keep track of what I'm watching; this doesn't really instill a sense of story. And again, the editing pace fights with the music. Plus, I'm not a fan of the sickish pink/orange gas-lighting look. I know that's hard to shoot under, and even harder to white balance or color correct, but it still needs attention. Though, the story/editing need attention first.

Pink Martini has such amazing style and energy behind their music (Sympatique is one of my favorite albums... ever), and a lot of it has to do with rhythm. Match that energy visually and the video won't detract from the music. In a music video, the two should play off of and within each other.
