3 DVXs for Major League Baseball/ESPN

Just wrapped a 12 day shoot for Major League Baseball and ESPN2.
It was for the MLB/RBI World Series boys baseball and girls fast pitch softball.

RBI (Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities) gets disadvantaged kids playing baseball who might not have otherwise picked up the game.
Equipment and uniforms are supplied by donors.
It gets kids off the streets, teaches teamwork, and even gets promising kids college scholarships.

They got to meet Hall of Famers Hank Aaron and Andre Dawson, and even had money management classes (how to use a checking account, how interest works on car loans, etc.)

Tough inner cities like Detroit, Cleveland, LA, Miami, but also the Dominican Republic (drums in the dugout!) Puerto Rico, and the girl's team from Hawaii (man, those were some CRAZY chants & cheers!)

The Shoot:

Three DVXs and shooters, (+ three sound guys), covering FOUR games at a time at the Florida Marlins spring training complex.

One camera per game (a VERY tough way to cover baseball, and small cameras aren't the easiest for following the ball), plus one crew also covering the fourth game (there were always one or two more important or close games).

Shoot warmups, team huddles, game, dugouts during game, teams congratulating each other, winning and losing coaches speaking to their teams.
Often shooting on the field from behind 1st or 3rd base, being VERY careful (I had a foul whiz 6 inches from my head!)

Put a wireless on a coach and player before the game.
My Senn G2s were awesome!
Chattering players in the outfield...
Diving shortstop in the clay landing on the lav...
Sliding into 2nd on the transmitter...
Great sound the whole time!

MLB sent their requested scene files (Squeeze and... 24p normal!).
I was the only DVX owner/operator, MLB sent a shooter, plus another guy.
I had to answer all menu questions, issues, etc.

12 hour days (7am- 7pm) in the blazing Florida sun and humidity for 12 days.
A rental DVX had one error problem, but otherwise the cameras did great.
My Hoodman was the object of envy, and cardboard hoodmen started turning up...

Some great drama, good baseball (plus costly errors), emotion as teams get eliminated and players move on or leave for college, and some wild celebrations for the winners!

It's a 1 hr show on ESPN 2 Sunday night, October 18, time TBA.
Check it out

sounds exciting. man i'd luv to see an edit that u did with ur footage cuz the few things i;ve seen from u, I like (i know that aint happening but one can wish). they requested 24p huh...goodstuff. down with 60i :D 12 hour dayz!!. man that is crazy...and cover that with one camera. Hope u got paaayyyed!

Thanks!
And while the "End of SD/DVX" talk has some valid points, shooting 7 or 8 tapes a day would be crazy on cards!

wow, that's really cool.
would really like to see the video on air but I would probably miss it so add a video link after oct 30.

Not what I'm worth, but good enough.
Lowered my day rate for the 12 days, and gave a weekly rate on the DVX.
But they're a good client, so I try to work with their budget.

True, I was thinking of the difficulties of a loader (or two) and P2 cards, and the budget that would entail.
We were looking at 20-25 tapes a day x 12 days (speaking of budget...)

How long does a 16GB SDHC card last?
Yeah, still kickin with the DVX...

I'm agreeing with Matt there Chuck, SD cards are cheap and on a 16gb card you get 90mins in in highest quality setting shooting in either 1080 or 720.

Matt the last series I did for TV I used my DVX and most of my stuff shot with that looked better than the other guys EX1 footage when it went to air. I have to admit, the DVX rocks when broadcasted, i'm yet to find out with my HMC but it won't be long,,,, I'm about to start filming for another 6 episodes.

Tape does suck now after getting the HMC,,,, I love the workflow!

JFEditor, maybe PMing him will help. Maybe he doesnt want to put that on blast....but what i understand is that it will vary depending on where ur located. I saw some rates somewhere around here on the boards and they were saying it was kinda low. but if i got those rates where i am (jamaica) i'd be good. I charge US$450 a day to shoot with lights (3 light kit) and audio. The rate falls off as requirements fall off example if i;m not using lights...or audio or whatever. And i also MAY do half day. but thats kinda up to me and the particular client. Thats prolly low in the US but out here...if i do a couple shoots i;m good for the month. I just shot for 3 days on a documentary at $380 a day (no lights) and i'm good for the month. Anymore jobs after that is gravy $. And thats just shooting...they want me to edit but i'm working on another doc so i cant take that on. So that would be another cost. But that is way low for ya'll. If i charged some of the prices i see here...then I no one would use me lol....but thas all about where u are.

I asked a cam op for a reality show being shot across the US and he said he's making $150k a year. He's away from home 12 days every two weeks for most of the year.

Jambredz' rates are pretty close to what I charge 2,000 miles away in Wisconsin. I start a little higher and take the price down as the quantity or the fun goes up.

PMed.
I don't mind sharing my rates, just not in this thread, OK?
I signed several non-disclosure documents, and while content oriented, I wouldn't want to upset anyone.
Hope you understand.
Jam & Prof, thanks for sharing.

Sean, I didn't know you'd moved to the 150.
Now I have to go to that sub-forum to see your stuff, especially weddings, of course!
Good luck mate!
