2x Telephoto Picture Issues

I bought a lo-end 2x Telephoto extender and I'm having some problems with images and light. If any direct light hits a subject, I get a blue outline no matter what I do. Is this common with 2x extenders? Also, when I zoom in, the edges of the image become smeary, almost as if I put vaseline on the lens. Is this common with 2x extenders? Would either of these things happen with a higher-end 2x extender? Any comments or experience would be helpful. Thanks.

Yes, I imagine so. This extender cost only 69.00 dollars, about 1/10th of the Century. I think you're right about the lens, but for the price, I may use it occaisionally.

It's actually about 1/20th the price of the Century. But the Century is the only one that delivers proper HD-caliber results.

Possibly stupid question: I currently have a DVX100B and I need a 2X for a specific job coming up. The Century is about $1250 at B&H. I expect to move on to a HVX200 within the next couple of years. Can I purchase the larger (82mm) version of the Century 2X and use it on the 100B with a step up ring? (I'm trying to figure the optics of this arrangement and can't quite grasp the fundamentals. My instinct says that there'll will be some cutoff, but I also notice that the front element of both the 72mm and 82mm 2X extenders is 102mm, which suggests they are the same product with different mounts.)

Any advice gratefully appreciated!

I've since tried this lens in the field and it SUCKS! I found a used Century 1.6x on EBAY for 180.00 and bought it. Anyone need an aquarium decoration?

No, Century lenses don't work that way.

They may indeed be the same product with different mounts. Century can re-mount it for you; you could buy the DVX version and then later have them re-mount it for the HVX; I don't know what they charge for that service though. You should write to Bill Turner of Century/Schneider and ask him for his advice on this.

I got my new Century 1.6x lens yesterday, and boy, does it make the other cheapo lens look bad. The Century is pristine, powerful, and gives the DVX-100 some additional depth-of-field and detail. I gave my cheap lens to my daughter to play with as a magnifying glass.

I've learned my lesson: with lens, you do get what you pay for.
