2ND MUSIC VIDEO - 100a w/ redrock

nice, syncing looked off in some parts..wut were ur settings, u just use the dvx its self?

nice shots

guitar was a bit dirty lol

First off, loved the lighting and the look of the video; what did you guys use, in terms of equipment, to light the video (I read the redrock is pretty light-hungry)? The strings of lights looked great--more around the singer while he played would've greatly enhanced the shot (I recently saw a video, I think it was Eagle Eyed Cherry, where they had hanging light bulbs all over the scene, and the light bulbs would turn on/off with the music...advanced stuff, but the basic idea was pretty neat).

I'd have to echo Como's comments that it looked like the sync was off in some parts. Maybe some experts here can impart some wisdom on us beginners on how they keep the music in sync. Also, the light reflection on the guitar was a little distracting.

The video did get repetitive, though--the same few shots of him playing got old quickly. Personally, I would've used more closeups--like, just his hands playing, his facial expressions, etc. I would've also done some dollying and some trucking shots as he sang. Finally, and it's probably just me, some of the rack focusing felt too small, which made it look like bad focusing and not done on purpose (right?).

But in the end, you pulled off a really nice video with the resources you had. And isn't that what it's all about for us independent filmmakers (I'm getting ready to direct my first zero-budget video)?

it was alright. It's a pretty long song so you need a lot of different ideas in your main concept to keep it moving. People these days want things happening all the time...

And why the film burns? it seems random to have the appear in certain spots. It's an over-used effect. Don't be like everyone else

Those little lights in the background were great, definitely added some dimension to the frame.

And like others said, little out of sync. Just move those clips backward (or forward) a few frames.

cheers

thanks every one.

the sync issue still puzzles me because it looks sync'd in the timeline, something about the export was jacking it. I'm sure it's on the users end, but I still couldn't figure out, but needed something out the door by friday.

I used the film burns because it helped with transitions because its hard to cut on a single person with out looking like hard jump cuts...its even harder in a slow song.

I would have loved to dolly and truck more shots with the artist but we had the location for a limited amount of time...

the focus was really hard to deal with, we had a groundglass issue, but also had to keep the fstop below 2.8

as for the lighting, simple 3-point, one large 650w lightbox, tota light (I think thats 500w, maybe 650) and a littke 150w from behind. everything has ctb on it.

settings: nothing really special, the standard 24pa scene file. thats all I remember. I should work more with the detailed setting, but I never really have.

I found the next day to kill the guitar glare, use a soft wax on it...little late on that one.

the budget was $65.00 (the redrock rental) everything else was scored from friends.

thanks for the input everyone

By far your work was great, However the singer did'nt seem to be in it.
the lighting was great.
some of the shots where long.
this was your 2nd video, you did A good job.

I'm impressed! 2nd music video?!?! I would hope I could pull off something that nice on my second video (or any for that matter).

Other than the git/light issue , I thought the setting and visuals were great. The flashing background lights did throw me off some.

I like the party shots, I would have liked to see more of them while he was actually singing rather than staying on him for the lyrics and the party for everything else.

I would have also liked if the party portion told some type of a story. I know thats been done before but it helps hold your interest as you want to know what is going to come next. Esp in a long slow song.

I would have like to seen the last shot a little wider as well, so I could see him put on his hat before he walked off. Kinda hard to know what he did unless you remember seeing the hat on his knee from the beginning.

Lastly, I second the comment about the singer not being into it. I'm not saying he needs to make funny faces or anything, John Mayer, but it would have been nice to get more emotion.

Like I said, nice work. Good color and light. Good setting. Keep it up!

I liked the video alot, I also felt like the singer wasnt into it but for some strange reason that added a feel to the video almost like he set the mood so in that aspect I liked his emotion in the video, I think sometimes we expect a perfect video with no flaws but I believe the flaws are what make the perfect video. Great Work cant wait to see your next one.

thanks for the input guys... yeah, artists are intresting. I know i could have done a better job putting the story together, thats one flaw that really bugs me about it. while I want to be a DP, I should've done a better job as a director.

the flashing lights... i think it was a phasing issue with the lights...or it was the ground glass breathing (that was annoying)

Next Video: Hardcore Band. No more slow songs. haha
