2k_RAW_moire.jpgHere is sample of the moire that the 2k raw producess. This is a really serious issue hence the footage is flooded with this. 4k raw on the other hand is brilliant but for that i need way more storage space...

What about if you take the 4k and downsample it yourself to 2k, what does it look like then?

This would suggest that Sony is line skipping to get to 2k over the full frame.
Indeed, which is why I think people would be best served to avoid the 2K raw for any purpose other than slow-mo. If you need raw, 4K is the only way to go, because that gives you the full sensor.

Would be nice if Sony would allow a window extraction of the central 2K; that raw would look great, but it would narrow the field of view and apparently they've chosen that they prioritize field of view over an alias-free image. Would be nice if they'd offer both.

Probably Odyssey 7Q will get similar moire in 2K

Only when recording raw. This isn't something that the Odyssey would have any control over. Sony reads their 2K raw by skipping columns and rows, and then pipes that out the port; the Odyssey can only record what it's given.

The reason I bring this up is, the Odyssey will also have the ability to record 2K but as downconverted from the 4K source. That 2K should be pristine.

The only reason to record 2K raw from the Sony onto the Odyssey, is if you want to record high-speed. Otherwise, you should be recording from the 4K stream, which should result in much higher final image quality because it'll avoid the line-skipping that the Sony does to generate its 2K.

fs700_setup.jpgImage is out of this set up with cp.2 35mm superspeed. There is no moire in the 4k raw but 4k raw 50p takes about 20 gigs a minute so you end up running out of storage space pretty quickly.

To my knowledge if one wants to records 2k raw with Odyssey even at 25p you have to use the raw that the camera supplies. This 2k raw out of the camera has moire, so in other words if you record raw with Odyssey it has the same moire.
Correct me if i am wrong on this and they somehow down sample internally in Odyssey the 4k raw signal to 2k raw signal.

You are correct as far as raw goes. But the Odyssey has the additional capability of downsampling the 4K raw into a 2K or 1080p full-res HD signal. That would *not* be raw though, it'd be compressed video in something like DNxHD or ProRes. But it should also be alias and moire free.

Sony probably has not shared the details and algorithms that they use to process the raw data read from the sensor on this camcorder to CD. I would quess again that for example the process of creating s-log2 and s-gamut for just luminance values is a pretty well kept secret on sonys end...

How CD will sort these issues on colours, gamma, noise, etc is to be seen as they release some samples or start shipping the units. Good thing is that this is process that can probably be altered an fine tuned later on with firmware updates.

CD has worked with arri raw, so they have the knowledge, but sony has mastered the process of turning he sensor data into nice images. Lets hope that CD deliver what they promise :)
