2k RAW aliasing

My question is since the FS700 is currently scaling down the footage from 4K to HD, would the aliasing be that much worse with RAW? I do notice (like many others) some aliasing on extreme contrast edges, is that because of the downscaling?

If the 2K RAW has the same amount of aliasing as the HD, I can live with that.

This F55 was shot on 2K RAW and it looks pretty awesome. i can't see much aliasing, but it is Vimeo so it's hard to tell.

This FS700 RAW video shot by our own Filippo looks great to me as well. He said it's mostly 2K RAW. There's no brick walls in it to really judge, but looks solid for sure. The 240 fps RAW that Filippo is getting looks a LOT cleaner than the current 240fps internal.

Personally, I would hate windowing the 2K. The crop factor would suck and I personally like shallow DOF.

The 2K RAW will be much worse, yes. Because the 2K isn't scaled, it's pixel-skipped.

If you want high quality, and raw, stick with 4K. The only reason to go 2K raw is to get access to the higher frame rates, IMO.

Gene,

I guess 240fps 1080 footage would contain similar aliasing because that it also line skipped AFAIK, the resolution charts suggest that's the case.

I've always wondered about the 1080 coming out of the camera too, i've never felt it was as good as it should be coming from a scaled 4K sensor and i don't know why.

Point the camera at a detailed scene with lots of diagonal lines. Shoot some 1080p. then take a still (which is QuadHD). Take that still, scale it properly with a decent scaling algorithm and compare to the HD footage...

Barry,

The windowed idea is great, but you could just crop the centre of a 4K image in post if you needed too. Image circles for 16mm and S16mm lenses can vary and if you choose where to crop you get a little more flexibility. I still maintain tha 4K ProRes data rates aren't too difficult to deal with and at least you give yourself a few more options...

cheers
Paul

what are the chances for future 2k windowing in future software upgrades? would it even be possible? this would give me huge range ,for my surf/wildlife shots .

As I say in Alister Chapman blog, my idea I sent to Sony long time ago was to give us "WIDE-FORMAT 2.35:1 CROP" for any HFR shooting ->

This Crop 17.0mm X7.23 mm size should produce some kind of 3K resolution for Slow Motion ... it's bigger than RED Scarlet 2K crop:

if someone here can calculate WHAT possible SPEED will be available in this mode I will be happy to see it ..

Here is what Sony promise to give with update in December for F5 / f55 cameras and we just MUST to PUSH Sony to give it for as too!!

On this sketch I took numbers for size of FS-700 image from Sony RAW Viewer in "um" ( Micrometers ) so I believe it's better to calculate..
So when you compare this 2K Crop to my "WIDE-FORMAT 2.35:1 CROP" - you will see the difference..
and because ANY of this CROP are just SOFTWARE MODE, Sony are ABLE to give us BOTH OPTIONS.. don't you think so? :)
I understand, that "WIDE-FORMAT 2.35:1 CROP" do NOT fit in "Super-16" Image Circle.. but it's not always a "problem" as not so many people use "Super 16" format lenses..
So.. Why not? :)
Sorry for my English.. but I hope you understand my arguments.. and I'd like to see everyone opinion about it..
and if you agree with me - let's WRITE to Sony and ask to give us BOTH of this Crop Mode - "WIDE-FORMAT 2.35:1 CROP" for maximum quality and minimum crop and 2K - for "Super 16" format lenses

True, you can, but that defeats the two main reasons to want 2K instead of 4K -- smaller file sizes and faster frame rates... although your point about using smaller-format lenses remains.

If someone wants high quality out of an FS700, it's best to totally forget 2K raw and just go for 4K as it's uncompromised. If you need fast frame rates, the unfortunate situation is that you have to tolerate the pixel-skipping. If they would offer a windowed option, that would give us uncompromised fast frame rates (well, uncompromised in quality; it would be compromised in terms of field of view of course).

This is why I'm so crazy about MY way of "a windowed option" as it gives us the best combination of better Quality and less cut from FOV .. .and even give us "ready cooked" Wide Format with 2.35:1 Aspect Ratio
The only question is - HOW FAST we can go with this size?? :) .. Also, I would ask Sony to give us CLEAN 24.0 frame rate too ! :) ...
