28-90 f2.8

I just got in another FD lens I bought off ebay. It's a 28-90 F2.8. It has 67mm threads, so it works great with my
Heliopan+step ring that I have been using on the kit lens. Seems like a pretty nice piece of glass, I like
the images it gives so far. It's a little heavy though, I'm not much of a 'kitted out' guy as I prefer to stay
simple, but I may have to buy a cheap set of rails with lens support, as I don't want to ruin the mount on
my camera.....maybe something like this:

In the meantime, I shoot with it with my hand ALWAYS supporting all the weight of the lens. I guess it's really not
very much heavier than the kit lens, but it is longer and I'm afraid of torque putting strain on the mount.
Still, for $60, seems like a useful range to have and pretty fast.

Dude, you have the one I've been trying to get. I won a bid on a FD 50mm F1.4 for $55. But when I got the package, it was just
a flat rate envelope with a big slash in it. I'm in the process of getting my money back on that one and going to bid on
another 50mm F1.4. Seems like that would be a GREAT one for talking heads + low light shooting.

I don't see anything in that link supporting the lens, I guess you have to buy something additional to support the lens. I'm interested in hearing what you end up with. I would like to use a matte box (and a lens support would be a plus) but I don't see how using a variable ND filter would be practical using a matte box. There are at least two other lens supports that are strictly lens supports (no matte box, no interference with a variable ND, attach to bottom of the camera) on EBAY, I have the one made by Manfrotto to use with my Canon 70-200mm, works ok. I have read one post of a loose E mount (side to side) that sounds like a factory problem, but is cause for concern.

Ok, sorry, it's pouring rain and pretty crappy out. I was only able to shoot like 2 handheld shots before it
started pouring again......so shaky stuff, without much to look at. I'll try and do a proper shoot using
just this lens once it clears up around here. Anyways, here's the quick little test, shooting with
the $60 28-90 F2.8 FD lens with no color corection, straight out of the camera.

Man, that's too bad. I don't even *own* a carpet knife.

Ahem.

It is a lovely lens, though sadly I haven't had much chance to use it yet, barring a few tests. Actually I'm eyeing up the 24mm f1.4 L...

Are you sure that's an FD...?

and not a 3rd party lens with the FD mounting system?

I know they make a 28-85mm, but not a 28-90mm.

I'm interested because the 28-85 is f4, and if the 28-90mm is a true FD and at f2.8, then I may of found my next lens.

Liam,

Sorry, you are absolutely right. It is a Vivitar with an FD mount. You know more about
these things than I do, I'm not much of a still camera lens guy. I just figured for $60
it was worth a shot on a zoom lens that was 28-90 and F2.8. I'm pretty happy with it
in general, manual iris so you can control that, the focus does cause the lens to
'breathe' a good bit, but I've got the kit lens for shots that I need to stay in
focus throughout the zoom range. So, no zooming during the shot, other than that,
it's fine.

The lens is a little heavier than the kit lens, and longer so I'm worried it
may put some stress on the emount and looking around ebay for a cheap set
of rods with a lens support.

Before I bought it, I searched online and found some reviews, most of them said really
good things about the lens, so I gave it a shot.

Kind of hard to find though. I searched on ebay and was able to find
a grand total of 3 of them for sale. 1 was from an overseas seller, another
was the F2.8-3.5 version (which would still probably be good). Even the
F2.8-3.5 version is hard to find. You have to watch online for awhile to
find one.

A similar, original Canon lens I have is the 35-105 F3.5 zoom. Very nice lens:

- constant aperture (though 2.8 would be even nicer)
- doesn't elongate with zooming at all, facilitating use with mattebox - follow focus rig

And when I got it from eBay 3 years ago for my EX1/Letus combo, it was... $25!

Yup, I was looking at that one as well. It is easier to find one of those 35-105 F3.5 zooms on ebay than
the 28-90 F2.8. Again, they are pretty cheap, and the reviews on them are good. The cool thing to me is
all these different lenses. It seems now days, there are the standard 11-16, 17-50, 24-70, 28-75, or
70-200 zooms. There are a couple others, but those are kind of the standards in the F2.8 range and in
the focal lengths that the kit lens covers. So finding things like a 35-105 or 28-90 is kind of cool....
of course they are a little heavier and so on, but seriously, the prices are pretty good.
