.264 Footage in a ProRes 422 Timeline

I'm in the process of editing a film shot on Canon 5D, H.264, 1920 X 1080.

I made the mistake of not compressing the footage to Apple ProRes 422, instead I brought the footage straight in and edited on the timeline, which was set for Apple ProRes 422. I know, I'm new to this.

My questions are...

A) Is there a quality different between .264 and Apple ProRes 422? As the film is now edited.

B) I've noticed that there is a border around the image in the Apple ProRes timeline. Is that due to the codec being on the wrong setting?

Is there a simple way to resolve this problem, or do I need to compress the files and start back at square one?

Any guidance on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Just compress it to ProRes, and replace the footage. The timecode will be the same on both, so you can replace it with the same ins and outs.

h264 doesn't hold up well to CC I hear.

Thanks for the feedback.

I followed your advice and compressed the footage to apple pro res 422, and re connected the footage in the timeline.

For some reason the film is still cropped with a black border around the edges. The footage is 1920 X 1080, shouldn't that be full screen?

When I brought the .264 files into the .264 timeline it was full screen.

Any info you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a ton.

P.S. I've attached a screen shot to show you the cropped border. Screen shot 2012-01-08 at 6.00.36 PM.jpg

Something is wrong with your timeline settings, check it and see what your ACTUAL timeline is set to. It looks like it might be on 1280x720.
