250 GB EXT HD for $159.00

I bought a 300gb Seagate Barracuda HD for $100 on sale and put it in a $25 USB/Fire enclosure from NewEgg.com. Works Great. Seagate drives are quality and always on sale these days.

I'm going out on a limb and saying it likely wasn't, as most external enclosures are designed for the standard PATA or IDE interface.

I do have a Seata SATA 300GB that was $109 but the enclosure for SATA drives are very hard to find and run in the $80's (SATA,Firewire & USB2 outputs) & one of the two vendors is less than wonderful. The New Egg enclosures are for ATA drives. As I run both over USB 2.0 I don't see any difference in performance.

SATA enclosure solution

I've done this many times and it works great.

To make on board (i.e. motherboard) SATA externally accessible:

http://www.macgurus.com/productpages/sata/SATACables.php

scroll down to the section "Single and Double Cable PCI brackets" order "12 in. Dual SATA Cable with PCI Bracket"

Then go to:

http://www.coolgear.com/productdetails1.cfm?sku=USBG-SATA-351W&cats=&catid=170,131,161

And order a SATA/USB enclosure for a SATA drive (very important to note that this is for a SATA drive NOT IDE).

Install your favorite SATA drive.

When you're done you have an external SATA that runs at full speed (1.5Gbps - yes that's GIGA) and a hard drive that's accessible from computers that only have USB 2.0 (480Mbps).

I'm on a PCI express PC and was hoping to use firewire 800 but all of the PCIe cards were for FW400 only - the FW800 cards were for the older 64bit PCI slots.

So I switched to SATA and it rocks. Plug and play (and for a PC that's saying something) and it works really well for editing HD using a SATA RAID from G-Tech.

Thanks for the link to the SATA accesories. I have a four bay [removable) FW800 drive enclosure for sale if anyone's interested.

my mobo (asus p5ad2 premium) came with external SATA connectors.
I always prefer buying the case and the HD separately because of the price. usually the external drives are way too expensive and for no reason.

There is a reason it's called pure profit price gouging :)
