GH4 25 string guitar in Indian music concert! Raga Kaushi Kanra and Sindhu Bhairavi

Don't worry if you missed it, It was 32 minutes of shear boredom.

Your right MICHAEL THAMES. That was the worst live musical performance ever. Those hacks should burn their instruments immediately!

I think they got started out last month by watching YOU-TUBE videos so the could squeak out those notes and bang on that bongo.

Hey, why dont you post up a cool music concert you filmed and edited, so that we can all be entertained!

You must have amazing taste in music.

I'm of the same mind as John Lennon, I like a condensed 2 and a half minute song, not a 32 minute endless jam. I understand this is improvisational music, but I found it kinda watered down Indian music. You built up my expectations with the 25 string guitar, which was just in reality a 6 string guitar with sympathetic strings. The guitarist was really boring, and unimaginative, in this idiom, kinda like the stuff I would do when friends come over and jam.......the other musicians were very good though. Perhaps since I play a 13 string guitar I'm being overly critical. The first half of the concert was insanely boring sounded like they were just warming up for 15 minutes...... I either had to fast forward through that or turn it off. Since there at least in my mind was little content, and normal predictable camera positioning..... it was hard to get through. Not that you could have done anything more creative in a live concert I understand that. Anyway, Im sure you will make an interesting documentary out of this...... just avoid the long jams. BTW, from what I hear Mathew Grosso is an excellent guitarist, and I know classical guitarists are looking to venture out into other stuff.

But since you asked for a music video I made, here ya go. A C100 MKi, with two 5D3's recorded with a pair of Schoeps MK4's and the preamp was a Metric Halo ULN2.

"MICHAEL THAMES"

"I'm of the same mind as John Lennon, I like a condensed 2 and a half minute song, not a 32 minute endless jam."

-That explains everything.

"I understand this is improvisational music, but I found it kinda watered down Indian music."

-Watered down? That was a fine example of North Classical Indian music. Both stringed musicians studied under the great Ali Akbar Khan for many years.

"You built up my expectations with the 25 string guitar, which was just in reality a 6 string guitar with sympathetic strings."

-Actually my mistake, this one is 15 string guitar with only 5 playing strings, and the other strings are not all just sympathetic, (another guitar in the doc has 25 strings) but check out that unique fretting!

"The guitarist was really boring, and unimaginative, in this idiom, kinda like the stuff I would do when friends come over and jam.......the other musicians were very good though."

-Mathew Grasso is a great musician of our time and his genius will be recognized as soon as his exposure reaches the level he deserves.

"Perhaps since I play a 13 string guitar I'm being overly critical. The first half of the concert was insanely boring sounded like they were just warming up for 15 minutes...... I either had to fast forward through that or turn it off."

-That's not a warm up its called an ALAP. Since im not a musician I will let Wikipedia help you:
The alap (/æˈlɑːp/; Hindustani: [aːˈlaːp]) is the opening section of a typical North Indian classical performance. It is a form of melodic improvisation that introduces and develops a raga.

"Since there at least in my mind was little content, and normal predictable camera positioning..... it was hard to get through. Not that you could have done anything more creative in a live concert I understand that."

-Then why mention it. I shot on 2 GH4's and only had those 2 positions available.

"Anyway, Im sure you will make an interesting documentary out of this...... just avoid the long jams."

-I hope the doc. gives justice to the subject, since Matt is way more talented than I have the ability to show with my limited skills. The long jam? This was a full stand alone performance, though the documentary will show playing, it obviously wont have a full concert in it, There is too much good information for that.

"BTW, from what I hear Mathew Grasso is an excellent guitarist, and I know classical guitarists are looking to venture out into other stuff."

-But you said "The guitarist was really boring, and unimaginative"

-Nice video but not the same. you had complete control and shot with 3 cams. This was Live and only 2 cams with only those 2 angles available. I asked you to post a LIVE performance that you shot.

I hope some people with slightly different musical tastes found this performance to be worthwhile if not magical!

First of all not everybody can see the video which a few pointed have pointed out already. The way you posted the video doesn't work in all web browsers and for me only works in Chrome on my Mac. I tend to only use Chrome when I'm developing sites and apps so I couldn't really see much at first.

Second I have to agree the video took a long time to get going and it will be very difficult to hold the attention of a lot of people in this day and age of short attention spans. This is not a criticism of the music or the talent of the musicians. My wife is Indian and I have a deep level of passion for this kind of music and even I was scratching my head wondering when it was going to get started.

It is your approach to the video that could use some boosting. I understand it was the situation and you were there to just capture it but really thats kind of what it felt like. Like you were just there to hit the record button. This is not a knock on you personally but that it is hard to give feedback on something like this. The video could use a bit more creative treatment. Clever camera work even with two cameras, more frequent cuts back and forth so we get some variety. Some close-ups would be nice with that second camera so we can feel like we are part of the action and feel the music being played. The art of these type of videos is to take these situations and attempt to make them visually interesting for the audience. It isn't an easy thing to do especially when you are by yourself and have limited gear. Again that doesn't change the fact of how others will perceive the video. I hate to say it but a vast majority of people might find it boring. Why not cut it shorter and make it more of a highlight of the best moments? We don't need to see 15 minutes of them tuning their instruments. I'm sure its important to some people but even a seasoned musician isn't going to watch that for 15 minutes. A killer 3-5 minutes of the best moments of these musicians doing their thing would be very interesting to a lot of people and keep their interest much longer.

3rd you posted a video for feedback and you did get some feedback. One of the most important things about the arts is learning to graciously accept feedback from others. Would you rather we all lie and sugarcoat the situation and say hey wow man thats great or would you rather we be honest? I taught production classes at a college for 4 years and just telling my students hey cool thats great never helps them. I know you can do this and what you have was well done from a technical perspective and now just needs some story telling creativity injected into it. You can still make the focus 100% on the musicians but bring the audience along for the ride and make it interesting to them.

Thanks for your feedback Thomas. Your points are accurate.

I am not sure why some people are not able to view it. i used the insert video icon on the thread post menu, so I don't know what I did wrong.

I wanted to post the whole performance as I thought that some members might enjoy this type of music but might not have access to a live concert.

I definitely did not put this up here to show my camera work, rather to share this music.

and just to clear it up for everyone else : THE TUNING STOPS AT THE 1:09 MARK, RIGHT AFTER THE CREDITS! the rest is the alap, until the tabla comes in.

The alap (/æˈlɑːp/; Hindustani: [aːˈlaːp]) is the opening section of a typical North Indian classical performance. It is a form of melodic improvisation that introduces and develops a raga.

You didn't do anything wrong. The issue is that DVX User uses a Flash player for embedded videos, and since Macs do not come with Flash preinstalled (and many of us don't want it anyway), there is just a blank area where the video window should be.

The answer is to just post a link in addition to the way the site suggests things get posted.
