24pn & pulldown

So i've been running some tests with my hvx and have a couple of questions.

If you shoot 24pn and then bring it into a fcp project eventually destined for tv how does that effect the pulldown?

Why would you shoot 24p if your headed to broadcast?

Also,

when running some tests in 24p and 30p mode and coming out directly to an hdtv, it still showed up 1080i on the monitor display.

Is this because it's 24p over 60i?

Is there no way to shoot progressive and view it immediately on a progressive monitor?

Curious (and a bit confused)

When you shoot 24pn make sure you DO NOT have the box checked in the P2 import window that says "remove duplicate frames on import" as there is no duplicate frames to remove. There is no pulldown if you edit 24pn material in a 23.98 sequence. As for the effect on broadcast, if you export it to tape or whatever format the station requires FCP can add the pulldown on export.

Same reason anyone that shoots a show on film that is destined for broadcast.....the "look"

Not sure how to answer this, as you haven't said how it is you're getting your signal from FCP to a HDTV.

Well, if you know you're going to Broadcast on a 60i signal, it may wel make a lot of sense to shoot 24p/60 so you won't have to worry about converting. That said, there are a number of reasons why it's nice to shoot a pure 24pN.

1. If it's going to be broadcast in 720p HD, it's nice to start with a progressive source.

2. It's a lot easier to do effects editing with a progressive source (no fields screwing with your rotoscoping).

3. Some people just like to work in a 24p timeline. I know a split frame during editing shouldn't make me wanna go postal but it does.

4. Saves space with certain codecs. Using only 24 frames instead of 60 can mean 2.5 times more space on cards and 60% smaller files on the PC. Not bad.

Thanks for the 720 p answers...

Oz,

As for the tests regarding 720p in the second part of my question. I was coming right out of the hvx with the component cable.

In 720p modes & 1080p modes the tv monitor was still registering 1080 i.

No p2 card in, but an hd signal was registering .

thanks,

Freddy
