24padvanced or 24p?

I am not planning on getting a film print of any of my shorts, but am I losing something by not shooting 24pa? People act like it matters even if you are staying on video. Does it? Help me out.

The difference between the two will never be seen on a big screen.

24pA is better because it's easier to remove pulldown, and you need to remove pulldown if you want to edit in 24p, which is what you want to do if you're planning a film out.

But if you're using 24p footage, you should edit in 24p anyway, regardless of your intended output. The only time you shouldn't edit 24p material on a 24p timeline is if 1) your editor doesn't offer the option, or 2) you need to mix it with other footage and want to retain the look of that other footage.

It used to be that some NLEs could remove 24pA pulldown but not 24p standard pulldown. That's less true now -- I believe, among the pro-level editors, that only FCP won't remove standard pulldown during capture or on the timeline (you have to remove it yourself in Cinema Tools).

Still, if you're planning to edit on a 24p timeline, use 24pA. Make that a bright line rule.

As for the big screen, your V. Detail Frequency setting matters much more -- for the big screen, shoot THIN.

24p vs. 24pA is an editing decision, nothing more. If you're editing on a 24p timeline, use 24pA. If you're editing on a 60i timeline, use 24p.
