24pA tape dupes

Hi everyone,

I have about 19 MiniDV tapes that I need to make copies of onto 19 fresh new tapes.

All the footage on these tapes was shot on a DVX100B / 24p Advanced.

I was thinking of renting a cheap MiniDV camera and connecting it to the DVX via firewire to just make straight running dubs. I’m curious, though, if a tape full of footage shot with the 24p Advanced settings will be okay to transfer to just any old tape via any old camera. Would the new dubs be able to be used in the exact same way, right down to having to capture with Advanced Pulldown? I want to make sure the process is completely lossless, even if I write the dubs with something like a Sony TRV-19, which doesn’t have any 24p fanciness.

Also, I wonder what kind of setup would be best—playing the original in the DVX while recording the copy in the rental, or vice versa… Any other advice is also much appreciated—tape brand consistency, etc. I’d like to do the best by the equipment given the circumstances…

Many thanks in advance.

I hear doing a tape transfer, with footage shot wit 24pA doesn't seem to work. I always shoot 24pA, and when i printed to tape, my footage got all messed, but then again, this was with final cut. It could work, I'm not really sure, sorry!

A tape-to-tape transfer *should* work just fine, to any camcorder. However there are some JVC decks that have been known to strip out the pulldown flags, so -- well, try one and see, and if it works out do the rest.
