24PA some clarification? Barry, etal?

Hi Barry, etal:

I may be barking up the proverbial wrong tree on this one, but I've at least got to ask.

Can I take 24PA footage that I captured in FCP using the advanced pulldown, drop the entire clip (20 minutes) onto my timeline that I've set the sequence to 23.98, send that footage out to tape, and the recapture that same footage, but this time as a normal 60i clip?

Of course I realize that I can do that, but my question is, will I preserve the 24PA widescreen look that I got on my original footage?

I posted my reason for wanting to do this on another post, but at that time, I was really interested in knowing if I could just use the 24PA clip as a 60i clip, which I did find out I could. But by doing so, I'll lose any benifit of shooting the clip in 24PA in the first place.

The rest of my project is widescreen 60i. In FCP, I can't combine 24PA and 60i in the same sequence.

Does this make any sense?

thanks in advance,

eric

This type of thing is a complete no-brainer in Vegas, so I'm guessing that FCP can do it as well. I don't have any FCP experience.

In Vegas you could import the clip as 24P or as 60i, depending on the project (it's stored on the disk as 60i with 24P flags, so you can determine at the time of importing it which way you want to treat it).

If FCP can't do that, they should really update the software so it can.

I can't think of why it wouldn't work the way you describe, with the possible exception that you wouldn't be able to re-capture the footage as 24P, only as 60i.

Hopefully NoahK or some other FCP expert will weigh in and give you an authoritative answer.

Hi Barry:
Thanks for your very quick reply. Yes, FCP gives you the option on capture to go 24P or 60i. I was just wondering if I could do both at the sametime. In other words, add both 60i clips and 24PA clips on the same sequence. I don't think I can do that in FCP, so that's the reason that I wanted to capture in 24PA, do the 2:3:3:2 pulldown that will remove the 2 redundant i fields, send it out 24PA, then recapture but this time in 60i.

I know this sounds kind of crazy, but just wanted to know if it would give me the image that I'm after.

thanks again Barry,

eric

FCP can remove advanced pulldown on the fly and can playback with 2:3 pulldown added. If you want to save it as a file with 2:3 added you have to use other software.

If you wish to mix 24 and 60 then your best bet is to shoot 24p (not 24pa) and just capture and edit both it and 60i in 29.97 sequence.

Re: 24PA some clarification? Barry, etal?

Hi Barry & Scott:

Thanks for your imput. In the future, I'll just use 24P if I plan on adding 60i material. I've already done a test with the 24PA material mixed with 60i material all captured at 60i and it looks real good. I still get the 24P look and feel which is what I was after in the first place.

Will I still have to be careful not to do any cuts on the judder frames of the 24P?

thanks,

eric

Re: 24PA some clarification? Barry, etal?

If you're editing it for 60i release (VHS, DVD, etc) then no, don't even worry about judder frames in 24PN. You can cut on any frame and it'll look fine.

The judder frames issue comes when you intend to use your edit as a reference to matchback to the negative, and you want to avoid cutting on judder frames because there isn't a direct film frame to match it up to. For just a video release, you can cut on any frame you want.
