24pa project to 29.97 question

I currently have a project that is in 24p. If I change my mind and want to export to 29.97, there should not be a problem?

I have footage that is in native 29.97 and want to mix it with the 24p. Ultimately, it will go to DVD, so I want to encode everything with the same specs.

I am a little weary of including the pulldown flags in the m2v file and mixing it with 29.97 m2v. Maybe I am off base - any help?

If the same timeline is going to have mixed source formats such as 24p and 30i, then you should be in a 30i project type. You would need to make a 30 frame EDL from your 24p sequence, import and batch capture in a 30i project.

Thanks for the reply.

No, I am keeping the formats separate. I just wanted to know if I rendered the 24p project out into an Avid codec or QT Animation will it include the pulldown for the 24p to the 29.97.

No, the QTcode export will be native to the timeline - 23.976. I suggest you bring it into After Effects and render in a 2:3 from there using the Avid QT for "make movie". This can be imported into your 29.97 timeline.

You can mix separate movies on the same DVD, but the same movie file cannot have mixed 24p native and 30i.)

By the way, do you have any experience with Vegas? I was thinking I could export at QT file from Avid and bring it in Vegas - to render out to avi file for m2v compression. I think from there, Vegas will add the pulldown for the 29.97.

It is wierd that Avid won't export a 29.97 file from a 24p timeline. I thought Mojo helped in that regard.

Export and playback are two different things. Mojo will make a DV NTSC Master with true 2:3 cadence.

Export is a reference to the native timeline thus matches the frame rate of the export clip. QuickTime itself can create 29.97 from 24, but it does a bad job by adding 1 frame every 4. Ugly.

My ultimate destination is m2v, so I guess I can let an encoder insert the 2:3 pulldown. Or, would it be better to digital cut to tape and then re-digitize it to m2v all in 29.97?
