I just finished a commercial for a client (this is my first work for broadcast) and the tv station told me i have some "discrete motion" in it. basically waht it came down to was that i shot at 24pA and they're complaining that the motion isnt very smooth. to speed things up, they asked for an AVI file so it wasnt from tape.
I worked in a 24 fps timeline and exported as a 29.97 ntsc avi.
can anyone tel me if this is just a matter of conversion or what else can i do?
Can i just move my footage to a 30fps timeline and export from there to get the desired effect, should i try to interlace it (that just seems backwards).
thanks

If you worked in a 24 timeline then exported it as ntsc, it should have dropped the extra frames and performed a 3:2 pulldown.

More often the problem is in a field dominance issue, check to see if that's the problem.

(btw, congrats on getting on air!)

also - how do i know which fields should be "dominant"... lower/upper? is there a broadcast standard for that?

I think it depends on how they ingested your AVI file. We use Final cut, others use Avid. You should ask what they use (and ask or find out) what field order they want.

Any easy way to do it is to export both an upper and lower version and see what works best.

If you have any tech questions, feel free to PM me and we can go over the phone if it will help.

Fiddler, what NLE are you using? 24pA is for editing, not for bradcast. Open you exported 29.97 file in a 60i timeline and examine the frames. See if the 24pA stuck (2:3:3:2), or if it was converted to standard 24p (2:3:2:3) which is what you need for broadcast.
