24pa DVD

Hi,
I just finished a short shot using the DVX100a 24fps advanced and edited it in FCP using 24p pulldown and would like to make a 24p DVD. I heard there was a way to do this but I don't quite understand how to do it.

Thanks

Once you're done editing it in 23.98 sequence then export via Compressor and select high quality MPEG2. This will automatically handle the fps. Import this into DVD Stduio Pro and burn a DVD.

I edited with DV NTSC 48 KHz - 24 Settings...Not 23.98, Am I up a river without a paddle?

Your best bet is to give it a try and see if it works.

All of this has been covered in detail before and is covered in the help menu of FCP. There is an Easy Setup that sets up all the correct settings for import and sequences of footage that's been shot in 24p or 24pa mode.

I might be wrong on this, but can't you take your 24fps sequence and drop it into a 23.98 sequence and render it... shouldn't it come out fine?

Scottdvx100 - I read on Nattresses write up that in order to have the mpeg-2 automatically recognize the fps you needed to first make a self contained quicktime movie then import it into compressor - true or untrue?

24fps -> 23.98 the thing to remember that fCP (and most tools such as After Effects) look at the fps going in and the fps going out and adjust it so it matches in time. That's why you can drop a 60i clip in 23.98 and it won't turn it into slow motion. It tries to convert it to be the same time rate as the sequence (and doesn't tend to do a very good job of it) Since 24 and 23.98 are very close you can probably get away with it, especially on very short pieces but it's possible it may pull a frame out here or there in order to convert it.

FCP -> Compression
It's worked for me to go directly through Compressorbut there may some benefit to go through QT file. I think there were inital problems with FCP/Compressor that were fixed in an update.

24pa DVD

Ok Thanks Guys! Now where do I start.....I did some test with compressions:

1st test) I exported my movie right from the FCP timeline into compressor and encoded it and then imported into DVD Studio 3 and burned a disc. End result was an alright picture that seemed bright and clean but seemed to have lost some rich contrast in the colors than I shot it for. As for the audio It was way out of sync so I took disc out and smashed it.

2nd test) Exported from timeline into self contained quicktime file with same 24pa settings and encoded my Mpeg 2 file from QT and made AC3 files for audio and imported into DVD studio 3 and burned disc. End result was a very film like look with some grain and some blurring in action shots but it did have very deep rich colors that I intended. But I think the darker areas of the movie might have been a little to dark and the end titles were hard to read. As for the audio, well let's just say it sucked! Not very clean and very unstable. Out and smashed!

3rd test) Took my QT movie file and imported directly into compressor and encoded with MPEG-2 90 MIN High Quality Encode The imported files into DVD Studio 3 and burned disc. End result was almost a masterpiece! Audio was awesome!! Everything synced up! End credits sharper than a tack and a very clean looking picture. The only thing that bothers me is it lost a little of the film look from the previous test and still a little hot overall! Out and put into a case!!!

Now here are some questions.....my quicktime file was saved at 24fps so when I imported into compressor did it encode at 24fps? Also are you able to play with compressors settings? I only seem to be able to choose from the presets.

Thanks

Rob

If the file is aved as 24fps then compressor shoudl be doign the right thing. You can certainly check info in QT player.

If you choose a compressor then you can expand them and check the settings in the info at the bottom of the window in compressor. You can set your own custom compression settings.

Was your movie over 60 mionutes long? If not then you can use the 60 min High Quality setting.
