24pa capture probs....again

Ok...I shot 24pa, captured with the advanced pulldown (Capture Settings, Capture/Input). I check the clips and they are 29.97fps so of course when I put them on a 23.98 timeline, they have to be rendered. Am I doing this right? I read the sticky at the top and the only part I didn't understand was this: "the FPS setting in FCP must be set at 29.97". Where is the FPS setting for capture? Is it supposed to have to render every clip when I put it on the 23.98 timeline?

I feel your pain.
I myself have been running into the same problem. I will do a "capture now" set to the correct settings and usually in between I get a time code break, or codence break. After it resumes and captures the rest, I have two clips. Wierd thing is, is that the first clip always ends up being at 29.97fps and the second one at 23.98fps!
Have yet to figure out the problem.

If you've done the pulldown removal correctly it shoudl have to re-render.

Okay so it's supposed to re-render (meaning that the 29.97fps clip that I get when capturing with the pulldown is correct?), got that. But in the sticky it says to set the render fps to 29.97, but on that website it shows the sequence pre-set as 23.98fps. Is this the FPS setting referred to in the sticky (that's the part that is still confusing me)? thanks for the help man.

The orginal footage on tape is stored at 29.97 so you can't just tell FCP to capture it at 24 fps.
If it's 24p you need to use Cinema Tools to convert to true 23.98 (if you wish)
If it's 24pa advanced pulldown removal should change it into 23.98 when captured.
if you wish to edit the result of either of these actiosn the sequence should be set to 23.98
If a clip needs to be rendered in the sequence something is different between the cli pand sequence.
One is running at a different fps or the audio is different.
If a clip says 29.97 even after capturing it with advanced removal turned on then it's possible it was really shot 24pa mode (f6)
Check the display on the camera to see what mode it says the tape was actually shot.
In FCP double check the capture settings before starting the capture.

Sometimes I have found that if the playback quality is too high I have to render everything. At least I did in FCP 4. When I lowered the playback quality to med. or low it solved the problem. Now that I have FCP 5 the dynamic setting chooses the quality for realtime playback/effects.
Click on the RT icon in the upperleft of the timeline to see your playback rate.

We shot F6, I know that for sure, I captured with the advanced pulldown selected, and the resulting clip is 29.97 so when I put it on my 23.98 timeline, it has to render. Am I doing something wrong???

Try importing a few seconds later in that clip. The other thought is to use log and capture.
Capture now usually creates problems. the other problem is if you start capturing at teh very start of a take it may not be able to detect the cadence information successfully that's why starting captures a second in usually works better.

Thank you for the tip. I've begun recapturing subclips that were brought in 29.97, and it appears that they're coming in 23.98 now.

To clarify, these subclips are specific takes of the larger clip that was brought in 29.97. I imagine if I just tried to recapture the whole larger clip, it would again bring it in 29.97 (as the larger clip starts from the very beginning of the tape).

In the future, I'll let the tape run a bit before doing a Capture Now.

Just FYI, the reason I do a Capture Now is that I'm weary of running the tapes or deck too much. I'd rather run the tape once, capture the whole thing and make subclips in FCP. I might be a bit over-paranoid, but having a tape deteriorate or break would be a nigthmare for me. :-)

Thanks again!

Damn this is frustrating. I'm still not able to figure this out. I captured the full tape (shot at f6) with the (Capture/Input) set to Advanced Pulldown Removal. Once imported the tape is 29.97?!?!?! When I make subclips and drop them on the timeline, they render and I get the interlaced frame every 4th frame. Any ideas?

Same problem here. I'm POSITIVE I shot in 24pa, and now whenever I log a shot, then do a batch capture, the Batch Capture window has NTSC 48 kHz Advanced Pulldown selected, but the info below that says that it's capturing 29.97. Conclusion - it's a software problem. Unacceptable for me because I've got to release this project in two days.

Is there a workaround in Cinema Tools?

I just trashed the prefs, repaired permissions, etc...no help yet. Other shots on the tape that I'm working from were initially captured just fine, but now when I try to recapture them, they always come in at 29.97.

Wonder if it's the new version of QT?

Here's the fix. In FCP, go to 'Final Cut Pro' pull-down menu in the top left, then go down to selec 'Audio/Video Settings...' In the next window, select the 'Capture Presets' tab. On the list on the left select 'NTSC DV 48 kHz Pulldown Removal,' then click on the 'Edit' button on the bottom. Change the FPS from 29.97 to 23.98. Save.

How it got changed? Who knows?

It's actually supposed to be 29.97 since that's your input source.
Does it say 29.97 in the bin after capture? (not in the log/capture area)

Try selecting a clip in the bin and using the tools -> remove pulldown.
For those having problems consider cleaning your heads.

Yeah the clips in the bin say 29.97. I tried the tool menu -> remove pulldown and I got the error message saying that there is no pulldown to remove. If I capture with the pulldown and it still says the clip si 29.97 (in the bin), that's incorrect, right?

They should say 23.98 in the bin.

Place the tape in the DVX and turn on all the displays. It should confirm that the tape was shot 24pa. If it says it is but FCP doesn't see as such then you may be starting the capture too soon (it needs a at least a few frames to check the cadence) or you may have a timecode break.

I checked and the tapes are all 24pa. I have my presets to 23.98 sequence and Advanced pulldown for the capture. I've tried capture now and captured the whole tape and I've tried capturing just clips (I made sure to let the tape play in the deck for a few seconds before starting the capture). Still the clips show up in the bin as 29.97. What could I possibly be doing wrong and is there any other way to go about capturing 24pa footage?
