24p Workflow for Broadcast

I'm starting a new project for a client who wants 720p 24p....and I'm a newbie in the 24p arena. The project will ultimately be for broadcast so I've got some questions for the pros.
When ingesting the footage into FCP, do the default import preferences in the Log and Transfer window work (Remove Advanced Pulldown and Duplicate Frames is checked by default)? When does that need to be unchecked?
When the project is 24p, what's the procedure for broadcast delivery? Do I simply place the edited project in a 29.97 DV/NTSC timeline and print to tape letting FCP handle the frame rate conversion?
Is 24PN handled the same way? Can 24PN be successfully converted to 29.97 for broadcast?
Thanks for any help for this 24p newbie!

First check with the broadcast outlet to determine how it wants the program delivered. Don't speculate. That will just result in wasted time and money.

I take it from your post that you are shooting in HD but delivering in SD- since you are considering placing your edited project in a DV/NTSC timeline. If SD delivery is what you are planning I would suggest utilizing a hardware solution for your down conversion. I use a Kona 3 card to do real time down conversions and they come out pristine. Far better than anything you will get by depending on Final Cut for the down conversion. By using the hardware solution you won't have to worry about going from 24p to 29.97. The card automatically adds the needed frames during the real time conversion while going to tape.

Finally, if you are planning on 720 24p- shoot 720 24pn. This mode allows for natively shooting 24 frames per second and takes up less space on your cards and hard drive.

Hey Jim, Thanks for the reply!
The idea is to have this production air in multiple markets so I'm not sure about exact final delivery requirements....I'm just trying to get the basics now.
You are correct...I'm shooting HD for SD delivery. Are there any options for a poor man besides the $3k Kona 3 card?
And one more question about shooting 24PN...How does the Kona 3 put in frames that aren't there? Or am I not understanding this correctly?

Same question for me as well -- all my broadcast media wants file over FTP, not tape. They ask for h2.64 720x480 - to this point I have been down converting my footage out of FCP via QT conversion ProRes HQ with letterbox aspect correction. Is there a better way?

Most broadcast delivery here in the UK does not allow down conversion with software and you have to invest in hardware to do this.

The Aja kona 3 is the best card but I have recently purchased a blackmagic decklink extreme 3 HD card and it is very good for delivery to SD/HD and 2k.

It is very good value if you dont want to go the whole $3k for the kona 3.

Hey Gary, Thanks for mentioning the cheaper option! Much easier to swallow than 3 grand! I just want to make sure if I shoot the project in 720 24PN, will this card do a clean down covert to standard SD NTSC broadcast format? Can you fill me in about the 24PN to 29.97 conversion process?
Thanks!
