24p w/o pulldown vs. 60i

Hello. I'm thinking of switching from my Sony PD100a to the Pannie and will have to learn very fast as I'm going shooting abroad. I've been shooting obviously 30i w/ the Sony and I wan't to "upgrade" the look so that it's as beautiful and "filmic" as possible. A couple of issues: I heard I can combine 24p footage w/ the 30i footage from the Sony in the same FCP project as long as I don't use pulldown (I think I get this). So what's the difference between using 24p w/o pulldown and 24p with pulldown in terms of looks and technically when I want to edit? And also what's the difference in terms of looks and technically between 24p w/o pulldown and 60i? I need to be up and running fast, and I need to know how to set up the camera for the shoot and how it will affect production later being that half the project was shot on the Sony. Otherwise I was thinking of the PD170, but it seems the Pannie would have more options in the future in terms of aesthetics. I'm probably never going to film, but would definitely go to DVD.

Thanks!

Re: 24p w/o pulldown vs. 60i

There's always pulldown recorded -- there has to be to get the 24p images to the DV spec for recording.

The difference comes when you go into the editor -- whether or not you *remove* the pulldown. If you don't, then you can edit in 60i like any other DV footage and keep the filmic look. The look is the same either way.

However, don't use 24pA advanced if you're going to edit in a 60i environment.

24pA will be helpful later if you want to make a 24p DVD.

thanks for the reply, but I'm still a little confused..What's the diff. between recording in 24pA and 24p w/o removing the pulldown? And also, when would I want to shoot 60i?

Re: 24p w/o pulldown vs. 60i

60i is an aesthetic choice. It will look like video, and similar to the PD-170 (and any other 1/3” 3-chipper). Not exactly the same, of course, but similar.

24p is put to tape IN 60i, but it’s ACQUIRED fundamentally differently than pure 60i. A very different look. Very film-like. It can’t really be described in words. It has to be seen.

24pA inserts a different pulldown scheme than 24pN and as such looks a little more jittery and strobic when played on a 60i screen. Search elsewhere on the site for exhaustive discussions on the differences between the two and when it’s appropriate to use them.
