1. Besides the different settings for ped, gamma....etc. in 24P on the DVX how is 24fps itself different from 25fps Pal. Is this where the 232 pulldown in 24 fps makes all the difference?
2. Can 25P footage be easily changed in post to look like 24P?
From your post I got the impression you said that PAL television is 25p. It's not, it's 50 interlaced. Just to clear it up . So if your question was: Besides the gamma/pedestal (actually it's a lattitude) difference that puts the NTSC progressive mode aside from PAL video cameras, is the frame rate all that different? The answer is No, it's almost the same, but it's progressively captured wich translates into double the resolution. Just to clear it up...
Yeah, let's be clear: I was comparing the 24P on the NTSC DVX to the 25P on the PAL DVX.
People refer to PAL as 25 frames per second, but it's not: it's 50 fields per second, and the difference in the look between 25P and 50 fields is enormous. However, the difference in look between a PAL DVX at 25P and an NTSC DVX at 24P is minimal.
I don't think it makes much of a difference between the DVX PAL and the DVX NTSC. Ok, the vertical resolution of the PAL version is a bit higher. But does it really make that much of a difference? Well, I don't think so. I have noticed differences from other PAL and NTSC cameras, but not the DVX. They look almost the same to me.
And don't forget that with the PAL version, you have to slow down the sound by 4%.
As for swisseffects, they also say that you should shoot interlaced rather than progressive. DVFilm disagree with this, and they have a proof of this: http://www.dvfilm.com/Cauis.htm
I'd think PAL would be better if using footage that was shot interlaced. But when deailing with progressive 24P vs progressive 25P, I doubt many people would notice THAT much of a difference.
But when you're going from 60i to 24P, or 50i to 24P, 50i would definitely be the way to go
