24p vs 24f?

Does anyone know about the 24f mode of the canon A1 as apposed to the DVX 24p? As I understand that the DVX is progressive and the new Canon is not, but I have heard claims that it is virtually impossible to tell the difference between this new 24f and 24p. If 24f is really just 24i, I don't see how that could be true. If it's capturing at 48 fields per second, doesn't it have to combine 2 fields shot at slightly different times into one image, making it less sharp?

no it jus tdrops one of the fields, and field doubles it into a "frame". IT looks good though actually. ITs not as crap as it sounds. Actually, the Frame mode, has some interlace artifacts, bt on a 1080i/p frame you barely see it.

i ve been looking to canon h1 footages in 24f and it looks jittery. sad, because i really want the A1 too. but look at disjecta h1 footages here and tell me your opinion.

I think his footage looks great, when you pan in 24f or 24p your arent gonna get the smoothest pan the world because of the low frame rate.

yes, but i own a sony hdv (always deinterlacing it with streamclip) and a dvx100b and it's really a lot smoother that what i've seen with the H1. look at the disjecta movie "bells man" for example, we can notice the quick jittery on the head and the cap.

Really? Doesn't dropping a whole field essentially cut the res in half. One might think you would undo the benefits of HD with that mode. I'm sure they know what they're doing. I just don't quite get how they're doing it with such supposedly good results. Isn't the XL2 true 24p? I wonder why then they are using this odd mode 24f for their HD cameras. Why does it still seem like so many cameras are avoiding 24p like the plague? Is it really that hard and or expensive to accomplish?
