In avid media composer 5 there is no problem with 24p for all who wants 25p! just make a 24p project and import your files, then open a 25p project, open your files from the 24p project drag them to the timeline and there you are 25p immadiatelly thanks to the fantastic mix and match in avid!!! Just put whatever you want into the 25p timeline and the output will be 25 p:happy:

So if you for exampel shooting via hdmi and have 1080i just put it to 25p projcet and you going to have 1080p

yea avid is very easy with that.. except you have to transcode the files and put the original MTS aside (in the end batch import them to a higher DNxHD res).. whether it would look the same as the MTS or not.. i wouldn't know.

No not really the way to do it, just import the file to dnxhd and done! Just one single import, we do this at the tvstation i work at all the time works just perfect.

what DCxHD do you import into? that might get the file X5 bigger.. what about disk space? :)
better to work offline at low DNxHD and just import the online sequence at high bitrate.
(your way might work for short sequences, but what about 30 minute project? or a feature)

No problem i have 5 tb, hard drives is not expansivt those days, very risky to batcimport you must know exactly were your stuff is cause if you dont Put in tape id manual you wont have one and no real timecode either.

well i don't have a lot of disk space... i'll be working around 2T.. and you also need backup so double the size

Yes the easiest way to do it saftly is just to have à backup of the mxf folder. As i Said before it Can be hell trying to batchimport if you havent given every clip à tape id, then you have to find every clip manually will take you days, been there.... Easier and chepaier in the long term to invest in some more tb.

i don't get it (i'm still on my learning of the workflow, sorry): if i have a folder with the original MTS and i batch import from there, doesn't the avid know how to identify them ?
i mean, they have the same names no?

No it would not find them so easy, cause you dont have tape id and not a proper timecode. If you look in your bin with your dnxhd clips you dont have à tape id you must do that after you been importing you clips easiest way to do that is to do everything by date, give your mts folder à name by the date your were shooting that, then you give the bin à tape id with the same date as the folder you do that in modify, now you now were too look for the orginal mts file, if you Put everyting in à gigant mts folder it Will be very hard to find the right clip, casue you Will have à LOT of clips with the same name . So the best way to do it is just to Go for dnxhd120 then you avoid à LOT of problemes. You need more space yes, But Its the best way to go.

I really have no idea what you are talking about here, or why you are giving this advice. Tape ID means absolutely zero in most workflows. If he is going to do an offline/online via EDL then maybe this metadata might be important. But in a tapeless workflow doing a transcode at final conform, tapeid/camroll ss not even used.

There are numerous ways to get Avid to adjust the FPS of incoming footage. One way is to create a project at the correct FPS and field motion of the source footage, then open your real project and open that other bin. That works nicely. Another is to use AMA, but this won't work with MTS files. You could also do a straight transcode of the files into the project and this will change the incoming media. Several ways to accomplish the same task with various tradeoffs.

Well he just told me it was à better way to work to batchimport your timeline. And i just say theres not a good idea if you have hours of material. Just try it for youself if you dont belive me, But how can the avid know What clip your asking for when you Will have one folder with mts filés with the same name and the same timecode? When you emptying your sd card go out shoting agian you Will get the same clip name agian, and if you have à LOT of folders with the same name ther Will be problems this have noting to do with a tapeless world how do you expect the avid to know
What clip you are lokking for if you have 15 mts clips with the same name. NEVERMiND this was about Its very easy to work with 24 p and wanting 25p.

I've just tried to import an MTS file into AVID MC5 as a mxf but AVID won't accept it. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

first be sure you have the latest patch (5.3.03 or such), i didn't have an updated patch and it didn't want to import. after update it works fine.
but it might be other project setting..

yes i think you're right about that. and yes, this topic should be in workflow threads, apart from the 24p 25p stuff.

What do you call a lot of material?

Considering I am 2/3 of the way finished editing a film with about 40 hours of source material, I'd say I have some idea. BUT, there is an issue here. I made an assumption that your source files did NOT all have the same name. If so, then yes, this would be an issue, and if there is no way to have a continually incrementing file name on the GH1, then that's about the dumbest thing I've ever heard of from a camera manufacturer.

When you emptying your sd card go out shoting agian you Will get the same clip name agian, and if you have à LOT of folders with the same name ther Will be problems this have noting to do with a tapeless world how do you expect the avid to know

Again, if there is no way to change this in the camera, then yes you are right. But my GOODNESS that would be silly...

NEVERMiND this was about Its very easy to work with 24 p and wanting 25p.

:) Yes. And it is.

maybe the best practical way would be to log the files first, and rename them accordingly (no matching names, exact description etc).. no?
