24p timeline.

Hi, folks,
I am new here. Just a little confused on the avid xpress pro 24p timeline. I shot something on 24p normal on a dvx100a and digitized into a 23.97p project. However, on the timeline, the time code still shows 30 frames in each second. when i output to a quicktime reference and open the file in quicktime player, i can clearly see interlaced images.

Doesn't avid convert the 24p normal footage back to 23.97 progressive frames during the digitizing? doesn't a 24p timeline mean that you get to work with pure progressive frames as long as you stay in the digital world without outputing to tapes again?

I really have been struggling with this problem for quite a while and couldn't figure out the answer. Please help.
Thanks,

Only Xpress Pro 5.1 and later can extract 24 frames from the 60 fields from NORMAL pulldown. Go to Film/24p setting to set CADENCE type.

Avid will track both the 30 fps timecode as well as the 24 fps timecode. Spend some time on www.24p.com and reading some of the resources pages.

Speaking of 24P timelines. What happens if I capture some additional 30P clips into my 24P timeline (clips were shot in 30P using the intervalometer)? I have been editing my 24P Advanced footage on a 24P timeline in Avid Xpress 5.0 and now I want to capture and add the footage I shot at 30P. I don't mind if there's a slight quality loss in the 30P stuff...as long as it captures.

Hi, Michael,
Thanks for the reply. To clarify my question:
1. I am working with Avid Xpress Pro 5.1.4
2. In Film/24p setting, the CADENCE type is set to "2:3:2:3" normal pulldown. Edit play rate is 23.976fps.
3. I am aware of the fact that I could select to see different timecodes by clicking on the timecode on top of my display screen.
4. I did read all the related articles on the www.24p.com website.

I guess my confusion is rooted in the definition of 24p timeline.
I don't quite understand why the main timecode is still based on 30 fps if I am working in a pure 24p timeline. (If I move one frame by hitting the "right arrow" key on the keyboard, isn't that supposed to be 1/24 of a second? how come it is still 1/30 of a second on the timeline?)

During the exporting to QT Reference process, with all the default setting (btw, I don't see any frame rate conversion option in the settings), I get a QT Reference that plays with INTERLACED images on my computer LCD . Since it has nothing to do with NTSC, I just don't get it why it still looks like a 60i movie.

Something interesting about the QT reference is, if I go frame by frame (by hitting my "right arrow" key on the keyboard) playing the QT reference in QT player, I get 2 progressive frames after every 2 interlaced. to my understanding, even if a normal pulldown has been added, it is supposed to go 3 progressive frames after every 2 interlaced. if an advanced pulldown was added, it is supposed to go 4 progressive after every 1 interlaced.

Sorry for my ignorance if I am asking some stupid questions here.
But I am seriously confused, and need your enlightenment.
