24p SloMo Best Practices?

I'm new to the 24p game and was wondering what the best ways to achieve good slomo in 24p were.

ie, Are there certain workflows that you have found to produce better results. Are there particular programs or methods that you prefer?

I know that 60i will obviously give better results but one of the reasons I purchased the 100a was for the 24p capabilities and I would love to stick primarily with 24p. How is it done in film? Can this be applied to 24p?

Hopefully this will be helpful to more than myself!

In film it's done by overcranking -- speeding up the frame rate and slowing back to 24p.

You get best results with the DVX by shooting 60i and then slowing it down to 40% of speed. There will be a resolution loss, but for the most part, it's acceptable.

You can do the same with 30p and slowing down to 80%. This will preserve your full resolution, but the slow-down is only mild.

You can slow down 24p footage, but the movement results will be choppy.

How this is done exactly depends on your NLE.

So I shot a scene at 30p 120shutter, capture into FCP5, put it on a 23.98 timeline, set the speed to 80%, and render. The problem is I get repeating frames not individual frames like I thought I would get. For example:

Frame 1 2 3 4 4 5 6 7 8 8 9 10 11 12 12... and so on.

PLEASE HELP ME! I FEEL LIKE AN IDOIT :embarasse

You can shoot 30p on the camera and do a 25% slow motion by playing back at 24fps (23.976). This is done in Xpress Pro by setting the cadence to NONE in the Film/24p settings.

I use FluidMotion in Xpress Pro for other frame rates. One is to capture 30i in a
30i project, render the footage as progressive using FluidMotion and then export video as QT reference and import back into a 23.97 project.
