24p shutter speed?

For whatever reason, I've always used the 1/24 shutter speed when shooting 24P. Is 1/48 recommended over 1/24?

I do mostly documentary shooting, a little music video, and a little narrative. I understand that this is largely a project-specific issue, and it's a matter of choice, but I guess I'm hoping for a comparison of the two shutter speeds and what they are each recommended for.

Thanks!

using a 1/24th sec shutter speed with a framerate of 24fps is usually only used as a last resort, meaning there just isn't enough light to shoot normally. Usina a 1.24th sec shutter speed is basically an impossibility with film, meaning the gate is open all the time or a 360 degree shutter. THis does two things, first it gives your footage a very blurry look, nothing will ever be sharp unless you are very still with the camera and nothing moves. Secondly this will take away from your film look as it is a look that just cannot exist in film. Now whether you use this look or not is completely up to you and the project that you are working on.

So what shutter speed with you use if they are people moving and you do have the light? Let's say if you are doing a wedding?

Use the "shutter off" which is 1/50. You can cheat down a little bit without much notice if you need the extra light in your exposure, but for most circumstances (when you aren't looking for a specific effect - stutter, blur, or eliminating "monitor roll" on tv's or computers) keep the shutter "off" which is 1/50.

The standard shutter angle for 24fps film is 180 degrees, which translates to a 1/48 shutter. Pretty much everything is shot at that shutter speed unless it's for an effect and is intended to stand out.

It is possible to run a camera without a shutter. You get an image with heavy vertical smearing.

good info, thanks. a couple follow-up questions then...

by "cheat down" do you mean go to 1/48 or 1/24? can you manually choose shutter speeds between 1/48 and 1/24?

and I vaguely recall a notion of choosing a different shutter speed for the highest quality slow motion footage. for shooting something intended on being slowed to 50% in post, what are the best settings?
