Hello, I am editing a 24p project on my Avid Xpress Pro without a Mojo (for the first time), and I need to output to tape as 24p, not 29.97. Is there any way of doing this without the Mojo? Perhaps using the DVX 100 for output?

Re: 24p output to tape

There is no such thing as standard definition 24p format. ONly HD has a true 24 frame format. All stanrd def formats (that inlude DV25 and DV50) are still NTSC 59.94 fields per second.

You can create a 24p progressive DVD when encoded as such and the 2:3 pulldown flags added to the MPEG2 stream.

Re: 24p output to tape

I'm sorry but I used the wrong term, I'm actually working with a 24 fps project, not 24p. It was shot on mini dv tapes with the dvx 100. Is there any way I can output to tape as 24 fps (for future conversion to film)?

Re: 24p output to tape

No, there is no NTSC tape format that is true 24fps. It is only 59.94 fields. If exporting out to film, there are a couple of things you can do:

1) Digital cut out at 29.97. This results in a 2:2:2:2 cadence where every frame of video is a frame of film. Picture will be sped up 25% but since it will only be used as a picture transport solution, this is not an issue. Devices such as Teranex can take in 2:2:2:2 material and create 1080p/24.

2) Export sequential TIFF files for each of the reels (1000 feet or less that 11:00 minutes) Select RGB when exporting. Keep each 11 minute export into its own folder called Reel 001, reel 002. The naming convention of the TIFF files should also follow that such as REEL001-"NUMBER of frame"
