24p or 30p & then convert in FCP?

I am still new to all this and my DVX100b, but I was talking to a video producer. He said he always shoots in 30p and converts later to 24p in FCP so as to not limit himself, since his client's needs that may change. Any input from the pros out there? Thanks!

I really don't see why a client would suddenly desire a change from 30p to 24p, but for most needs I'd say 30p is just fine. You'd only want to use 24p in situations where a "film look" is desired.

This "producer" doesn't know what he's talking about. Yes, it is possible to convert 30P to 24P, but it will never be true 24P, and the conversion process, know matter what method on the market today, is mediocre at best (I.E. It looks like sh!t).

The only reason I've ever needed to do this is when *most* of my footage was shot in 24PA, and then one shooter accidentally shot in 30P. I needed to edit all on one timeline, and so I needed to convert the 30 footage to 24.

Good of you to come and ask. Always be wary of people who "know it all"... even if they are working professionals. Lots of times it's the exact opposite, and there's some serious flaws in their logic.:zombie_smiley:

Are you sure he shoots in 30p? He may shoot in 60i. That, you can convert much better than 30p, but you still lose resolution. 30p is the most inflexible format, by far, so if that's what he's doing, he's really screwing both himself and his clients.

Again, what I don't understand is why a client would suddenly decide to go to 24p to 30p. I can't think of any reason where that would be a necessity, other than like the situation Ryan mentioned, with a project being 24p to begin with and some footage accidentally being shot at 30p.

You should decide on the format at the beginning and stick with it. 60i may be more flexible than 30p, but that should not even be an issue. You shouldn't feel at all comfortable with changing a format like that halfway into production.
