24p or 30p - a client request.

I'm new to all this so please excuse my "newbieness". I'm a still photographer and I have a client that wants me to shoot a video for the web. I am shooting with a DVX100bp and editing with Final Cut Studio 2. They are requesting the Codec: DV/DVC Pro NTSC with a film rate of 29.97. I'd like to shoot 24p Advanced but do I actually need to shoot 30p to give them a Quicktime file with a frame rate of 29.97? If I shoot at 24p Advanced, will the export to Quicktime give me give me the 29.97 rate that they want automatically. This is all new to me and I'm trying to learn from ground level.

I'm also not sure if I'm setting up the Easy Setup and Audio/Video settings properly.

My Easy Setup is:

Format: DV/Panasonic DVCPRO
Rate: 23.98
Sequence Preset: DV NTSC 48 kHz - 23.98
Capture Preset: DV NTSC 48 kHz Advanced (2:3:3:2) Pulldown Removal
Device Control Preset: FireWire NTSC
Playback Output Video: Apple FireWire NTSC (720 x 480)
Playback Output Audio: Apple FireWire DV

When I go to Audio/Visual Settings - Capture Presets Editor in the QuickTime Video Settings, the FPS is set at 29.97. Is that set correctly? Is this what the client is requesting?

Thanks for any advice.

You can output as 29.97 after shooting 24pA and editing on a 23.98 timeline. It all depends on how you want it to look -- do you want the 24p look? Or something else?

Poke around in the FCP section for exact procedures.

I'm wanting the 24p look rather than a harsher video look. Do you think my FCP presets are set properly? I'm just not sure if I'm overlooking something and will have problems with image quality.

Check out the sticky in the FCP section on "how to digitize" -- it's confusing, but Noah clears everything up.

If they want 29.97 (probably for NTSC broadcast or for easy conversion to a web-based 15-frame codec), just shoot in 29.97. your video won't be "better" quality at 24fps. your better off (quality-wise) to shoot in your reqdeliverable format.

But it will look different, and the difference is about artistic choice.

Youre not "better off" by shooting 29.97, especially if it's not the look you want.

You can, but it's not the best way to go. If you're shooting 24p, you should edit in 24p. You can output any you want.

I'm not shooting 24padavnced and you cannot edit 24p in the 24p timeline because it still has the pulldown to 29.97. right?

They both have pulldown; FCP will only remove advanced pulldown when you capture. But if you shot 24p standard, you can edit in 24p if you use Cinema Tools to remove the pulldown.

But if you want 24p, why are you purposely shooting 24p standard and editing as 29.97? Not the ideal way to go.
