24P or 24pn?

I am still confused between 24p and 24pn. What is the difference? I understand that 24pn lets one fit more video on P2 (which is great), but what are the disadvantages of this mode?

Which mode should I use?

The difference between "720 over 60" mode (720p/60p, 720p/30p, and 720p/24p) and "720 Native" mode (720p/30pN or 720p/24pN) is that when you're in the 720p over 60 mode, you're always recording 60fps to the cards no matter what. Even if your framerate is set to 24fps in the scene file settings, the camera is going to pad those 24 frames with 36 other duplicate frames so that 60 frames are actually being recorded. The reason you'd want to use that mode is so that you can output the signal via firewire to send the footage to a deck or a computer in a "capture now" situation. Note that if you use this mode, you'll need to use the multiple framerate converter available for FCP (for free on the panasonic website) to get the cadence you're after in post. It is an extra step that will take both more time and hard drive space, as it creates duplicates of the original files without the extra padded frames.

24pN mode, on the other hand, is a new mode to the HVX which only records the active frames you are shooting. Therefore, if you have selected 24fps in your scene file while in this mode, you're only recording those 24 frames (as opposed to 60). This is great because it allows you longer recording times and faster time to post. The other great thing about this mode is that if you are shooting at a different framerate than your base of 24pN, say, 48fps, it's still going to play back in camera at 24fps. That means you can view the results of the overcranking or undercranking right in the camera. That's something you can't even do with Varicam. The downside of the "native" mode is that it can't be used to stream directly over firewire and it isn't capable with the DVCPROHD decks that expect 60fps at all times.

My suggestion to you is to put your camera in 720P/24pN mode and leave it there, unless you really have a reason to shoot something else. Then all you have to worry about is selecting your framerate in your scene file and you'll always get the maximum recording time to your P2 cards.

I look at it this way: if recording to the cards, always use 24pN mode.

If recording through the firewire, that's when you'd choose 720/24p mode (examples: capturing on a computer, or firewiring to a DVCPRO-HD tape deck).

What about opening options for slomo

What about opening options for slomo

I plan to normally edit in 24p in FCP. So normally I would use 24pn. What mode would I use if I wanted the flexibility of doing either 24p or overcranking to end up with slomo? What is the settings and workflow look like for this?

Again, 24pN.

You only use 24P when you want to stream through the firewire port. If you're recording to the cards, use 24pN.

So for Slomo...

So for Slomo...

So from 24pn I can use it as 24p or set the scene file to 48p and have FCP slow it down by half and get slomo or somehow do a pull down to get 24p?

PS I do not have a camera yet. But I do have 2 8gig p2 cards sitting on my desk waiting to be used. I could not get them to work in my DVX

So, if editing 24pn and you want to print to tape after
approval, what would you need to do?
Also, sombody with a CineAlta wanted to know
if I could shoot some B-roll.
I was thinking of shooting 1080i30p as FCP
does not like the 1080i24 yet.
I think they are shooting 24p on the CineAlta.
They were thinking they could use a file
kinda like what Artbeats delivers?
Any ideas?

Yeah, they don't fit in the DVX, do they? :)

When you shoot 24pN, the camera takes care of all slowing down and frame rate conversion. It's an effortless process. FCP would import your 24pN/48fps clip as a 24fps clip, and it would automatically play back at 1/2 speed. No pulldown, no hassles. It's all done automatically for you.

So from what I'm understanding, the reason for using regular 24P when streaming through the firewire port is that you ostensibly will have hundreds of gigs to use and can have the flexibility of picking and choosing your final frame rate in post? Shoot in 24P, edit in 48, 60 etc...

Is that correct? Why would you ever shoot 60P in camera then?

My camera comes early next week so I haven't seen this for myself...but I'd like to be prepared!

Now I don't have my cam yet so I don't know but can you copy the files off the card from the firewire on the camera or do you have to have a card reader deck?? or laptop??? Also if this is true why would you want to capture over firewire except if you record to tape??

So can I take a 24pn/48ps clip and also somehow use it as standsard speed. Here is my goal. Say I am shooting a scene and I am not for sure if I want to do slomo or not, but I want that flexibliity. But I may also want to use it normal speed. Should I use 24pn/48ps?

See if speeding up the footage in FCP looks funky.

What about 1080? Does no one like that?

Good question, as I have some pick-up shoots that need to be
compatible with a CineAlta shoot. I will shoot 1080ip and deliver
to them a QT file with a 29.97 time base, since FCP does
not like 1080i24p yet.

wait so you are saying that 24pN will not work with firestore and the only way to undercrank and overcrank is with the P2 cards?

yes and no

haakon really explained well i believe in the second post of this thread. in short....

24pN will only work with the P2 cards.

you can still do 24p and under/overcrank on a firestore, laptop, etc but it will record 60fps with duplicate frames and it is up to your NLE to do the pulldown if needed.
