I read somewhere that the 24p mode gives the "film look" but it didn't say that for the 24p Advanced. I thought 24p Advanced just had to do with editing purposes. I'm still a bit unclear about the differences and what mode I should shoot in.
They both get the CCD to record 24 frames per second, and look exactly the same (natively.)
Where you notice the difference is how the 24 frames are recorded to tape - smoothly in 24P, and with more jitter in 24PA. The 24PA footage was designed so that your editing system can detect the ORIGINAL frames, and you'll edit in 24 actual frames per second.
If you have an NLE that can cut in 24 native, definitely shoot 24PA. You can convert your footage after it's been edited to play back smoothly if you want to (using the same process as standard 24P.) Basically, it gives you the most options in post.
To clarify -- your NLE can also "detect" the 24p frames if you shoot 24pN (IF your NLE supports 24p timelines and removes pulldown). Shooting in 24pA just makes it easier.
Anticipating your next question, you’d want to shoot in 24pN if you’re not planning to edit in a 24p environment. But if you ARE, 24pN will still work without a problem.
