24p, motion, Firestore and the Web

So I had this theory that shooting 24p would be a good choice for doing Web based video since computer monitors are basically progressively scanned. I usually shoot in 60i but finally got a DVX and am now trying to do 24p for the above reason. The type of shots I do have a lot of motion, mostly panning left to right, diagonal and vertical. I'm shooting rooms, buildings, that sort of thing, so I don't have a foreground object to focus on. I also know about the 7 second rule and tried to really slow down the motion to avoid strobing.

Even doing that, I still got the dreaded strobe. What I don't get is when you see all the action in films, how do they get around the strobing? Particularily the jerkiness many here have found.

I'm using Premiere Pro 2.0 and also a Firestore FS-4 (not the pro model). So I'd like to get some thoughts on other things to try and see what the collective brain trust here thinks regarding best practices for creating Web based video with the DVX 100 (mine is the a model). Here are a few questions:
1. Is 24p adv a better setting given that I'm not looking to go to an interlaced monitor for the final product?

2. If 30p is a better option, can that be recorded by a Firestore FS-4 recording in 60i mode (AVI Tyoe2)?

3. Are there some shutter speed settings I'm missing? If so, is that the synchro scan adjustment?

4. Anything else? Anything? Anything? Bueller?

Thanks

I just started a new thread on this as I have simmelar problems. I can't see why we are so impressed with 24p or as on my Pall model 25p when it looks so jerky. I also wonder what am I doing wrong here? I also use premiere pro2.

There are two things you can do here which may help.

You can slow down the shutter to 1/24 to give you smoother motion. You'll lose a little film-like feel, but you will also do that with your other choice . . .

30p. You'll get a nice progressive look, but it will look more video-ish than 24p. Yes, it can be recorded on a Firestore.

How are you exporting? Give me the details.

Well Tony, maybe we can get closer to our desired end product with a little help from our friends!

David, thanks for the reply. I fooled around a little bit with the shutter and will try shooting that to see what happens. Do you know how to get 30p on the Firestore? If so, please share.

Exporting isn't really the issue here, I'm using the Adobe Media Encoder which is a nice piece of software. I'm trying to get the best source material pre-compression.

It does matter, because compression, output framerate (many web videos are 15 fps), bitrate, etc., all have a lot to do with it. If you're shooting/editing at 24p and outputting at 15 fps, you're not going to get a good motion.

30p will be fed to the Firestore in a 60i stream just like 24p is.

If you're getting strobe in your source material, you're still moving the camera too quickly. The "seven second rule" is inaccurate -- not every pan should be seven seconds. It needs to be slower the longer your zoom is.
