24p jumpy motion in DVD

Shot a project in 24p (F5 mode). Playback is fine in 29.97 Avid project. Export QT reference and encoded MPEG 2 in Sorenson. Video looks good except when camera is in motion. Gives almost a strobe effect during playback.

Working on a larger project that has not been edited, and have many hours more to shoot. Was shooting in F5 the wrong way to go? Is there a solution.

Look up Michael P.'s recipe for dvd's using Sorenson Squeeze. He has a great breakdown of the customization stage before you actually squeeze the dvd. That might help. I apologize for not posting the link.

If F5 is NORMAL pulldown and you are on a version of Xpress Pro that is less than version 5.1, then the strobing is due to capture of NORMAL pulldown ad ADVANCED which will result in a cadence error during NTSC playback with the 2:3 insertion.

Even thought the footage looks fine on the Avid source/record monitor, it is wrong because the computer monitor is not an interlace playback device.

If you are on a version previous to 5.1, please use ADVANCED cadence when shotting, If you are on 5.1 or later, you can use either.

To answer Michaels response, the footage is perfect in NTSC and the source monitor. I am using HD 5.2 software.

After a day of trial and error, I found that Sorenson may have been the major culpret. I have heard in the past that there have been issues with Squeeze. I switched over to Pro-Coder to make the MPEG-2 files and the final product is incredible. Better then anything I have ever encoded in the past. I would highly recomend the product after using it today.

I'm glad it's working for you, but I'd argue that your problem was more specific. I use Squeeze every day for progressive material and it's never let me down.

What settings did you use? I have the ProCoder, but have yet to see what's magical about it. Many many people agree with you, but I have not ever seen those kind of results.
