Could someone explain why importing a 24p clip into a 29.97 timeline plays normal as does a 30p clip or a 60i clip into the same timeline? I don't understand the pulldown technology here.
Becaust the DVX puts a pulldown so you can watch the footage on an NTSC monitor. If you want true 24p and your NLE can edit in true 24p then you have to take the pull down off . In other words you could not watch any of the progressive stuff without it on your TV set. Has to be 60i for NTSC.8)
I use FCP4, and all my 24p stuff looks great when I edit and watch it on an NTSC monitor. What am I missing here? If I'm editing 24p for broadcast, what's my situation here?
Just shoot and edit 24p normal. Since your going out to broadcast, there shouldn't be any reason to do straight 24 fps progressive (24pA) at all. You still get the full advantage of this portion of the DVX100's "film like" quality when shooting/editing in 24p normal, just that it's wrapped into 29.97 fps and 3:2 pulldown you need for NTSC broadcast.
What issues arise if you edit 24p material with 29.97 material in a 29.97 timeline. The shots will be wacked pretty hard in CC etc....match framing is not really important.
You wouldn't want to do that unless you want 24p speeded up to 29.97. You'd still be mixing interlaced with progressive, so your output would do a pulldown on the 24p stuff. Generally, it would be a mess.
If you need to edit these on the same timeline, you can either convert the 29.97 to 24p or the 24p to 29.97. Easiest way to do this is DVFilm Maker. Once they're both the same, import and edit as you normally do.

On my old Sony 1.8 Ghz computer about 6 to 1, or that 5 minutes of footage takes about 30 minutes to deinterlace.
