24p interlacing

I shot a project using two cameras, a t3i at 1080/24p and an hvx at the same. The HVX files imported 30p. I read somewhere to reverse telecine; I tried, the files still look interlaced.

I've also read I should remove pulldown; do I do this with the original files, or the rt versions?

I've tried reading other conversations, but the bickering never results in a real answer.

Maybe the HVX footage looks interlaced because...it's interlaced. HVX only does 1080i. It's hard to get rid of that look.

I'm talking about frames that look like this, which appear to be 3:2.

You can't tell if it's 2:3 or 2:3:3:2 from a single frame.

The way you determine it, if your NLE doesn't tell you, is that with a 2:3 (24p standard) pattern, you will see PPIIPPPIIPPPIIP (P= progressive; I = interlaced), whereas with 2:3:3:2 pulldown (24pA), you will see PPIPPPPIPPPPIPPPPIPP. Shorthand: if you see 2 interlaced frames in a row, it's 2:3; if there is only 1, it's 2:3:3:2.

There's really no way for the footage to import as 30p. Are you going by "29.97"? It probably also tells you it's interlaced, not progressive.

What are you editing this in? Depending what it is, and what your pulldown is, you may be fine.

No, the HVX shoots progressive in 1080; it only records it in an interlaced stream. If you shoot 24p with Advanced pulldown (24pA, 2:3:3:2), it's easy to get rid of the pulldown and retrieve your 24p frames in any NLE. If it's standard pulldown (2:3), it may take more work in FCP, but it's easy in the other NLEs.

It's two interlaced frames. It's 29.97, yes. Editing in FCP.

Then you can remove the pulldown with a reverse telecine in Cinema Tools.

Or, if you also have Premiere Pro, you can drop it into a 24p sequence and PP will remove the pulldown automatically.

Can't help you with Compressor. I do know that many have successfully reversed telecine in Cinema Tools. Of course, you have select the correct frame to start from.

In the future, of course, all of this can be avoided by shooting 24pA. FCP can remove that pulldown automatically during Log & Transfer.

I only went to Compressor because, since upgrading Macbooks, Cinema Tools won't open.

I have no idea why Panasonic even includes 24p, it seems to be completely useless.

If you're referring to any form of 24p at all, it's perfectly useful if you do it correctly.

If you're referring to standard 24p instead of 24pA, it's included for systems which can't remove pulldown and only have the option to edit as 60i. The 24pA pulldown scheme isn't meant for that, and it won't give you the best results.

I've just read too many snarky comments on CreativeCow telling people "you should have shot in pA, so it's your fault."

So assuming I ever get Cinema Tools to work, how do I do this? I appreciate your input.

It's pretty automatic. You just load the footage and click on the "Reverse Telecine" button and it does the job for you pretty much with what I remember...I had to do it about a year ago for this video:

I accidentally shot the black background interview in 1080p24 instead of 24pA.

Is there a way to do it in After Effects? Apple tells me Cinema Tools no longer works on 1.8.
