24P in AF101E

Hello all

I just got my AF101E and all I can find are the 25P and 50i recording modes... I was under the impression that this camera could record in 24P native.

Thanks in advance for any help

... I think you need to turn the camera into NTSC mode rather than PAL mode to get access to 24p.

Thanks Hywel

Do you know if that would have any effect over image quality (I'm actually in Europe so wonder if that could be OK)

Regards

You do NOT have to shoot in VFR to get 24p. You just need to tell the camera it is in NTSC-land, and the various 24p options become available. The cameras sold in the different regions are the same, you just need to change settings to tell it what to use.

That's about the limit of what I know, though. I standardised on 25p for everything I shoot so I've not had cause to use the 24p modes. I think there are a few potential issues. Not image quality but how the 24 frames per second are recorded using various pulldown schemes to embed in the 29.97 fps stream. That has a knock-on effects making sure your NLE or external recorder can cope with it properly.

For my purposes 25p gives a flimic look almost indistinguishable from 24p. It is directly compatible with European TV stuff and no messing around with complications like 30 vs 29.97 vs 24 vs. 23.98 fps, drop codes, pulldown and so on. I don't display theatrically so I went for the technologically MUCH easier, artistically very similar 25 fps :-) But if you need real 24p, the camera can do it and I believe provides several options for how to handle it- maybe someone in NTSC-land can be of more help, sorry!

thanks a lot for your help.
The 101 comes to be our main cam, with a GH2 as B cam.
Just seemed too weird having to change Hz setting to access the p24 (with audio) mode. I guess it's time for some tests!!!!

I switched mine to NTSC land to get the magical 24p beware artificial lighting, I experimented at home with a flourscent tubes and shutter angle to minmise rolling bars due to elect lighting 50 Hz and shooting at 60 Hz
All seemed ok until I ventured out To shoot, ahhh rolling bars and flicker appeared in FCP that never seemed apparent in screen or EVF.
Only use if your lighting is DC powered....

Well, as long as p24 goes, I guess VFR will do for now... Been doing tests (recording to the SD cards) and looks good. Will deal with (lack of) audio issue next.
p25 is a no brainer (with audio) and Cinema Tools for the GH2 stuff (p24 to p25)

Not perfect but... isn't it always like that? I guess we kinda like it that way!

While 24fps gives the illusion of movement to humans pigeons would need at least 250fps..... I have just learned
