24p image too dark

:) hello all....I think I've seen this question addressed on the site but can't find it. I'm shooting in 24p DVX 100. The image looks great on the LCD camera screen, and in the view finder and with an assist monitor but when capturing to FCP the video image is darker. I've tried many adjustments and had the camera into panasonic. No problems . Is this common and do I need to over-compensate w/iris setting?
thanks dan

I'm assuming there is no accurate way to match a XL2 w/ DVX100 for a shoot. Can I come close in post cutting between the two. Thanks dan

Put up color bars on all monitors (including viewfinder, LCD, monitor) Calibrate as close aas reasonable.
Note that Macs have 1.8 Gamma. Most video is 2.2

Thaks I adjusted the gamma setting on my powerbook...and the images look great. However, when burning a DVD for logging from DV-tape, the image on a professianal monitor was dark. I['m still concerned that something is up with 24p when shooting When viewing on a NTSC monitor I have to pump the brightness way up. Dan

sorry, but how do you do this? Is it easy, because all this technical talk is confusing me.

I keep seeing people mention changing or fixing gamma on a camcorder and now I'm seeing gamma used with computers and monitors.

What is gamma exactly, just to clarify?

Oh, and how do you put up color bars on monitors and camcorders.

Sorry, so new.

Thanks,

calibration of all monitors is the best route...however one thing to consider is that the image on the LCD is in a different color space. what you're getting on comp playback is a drop in color space. DV is 4:1:1...of course if you had the Andromeda then you wouldn't really have this problem.

when i first started i thought/questioned the same thing. why did it get darker? then used the HSL, gamma, etc. and then exported it. made a DVD and played it on a TV and the stuff was too bright and saturated. then i calibrated everything, but more so the external monitor...can't really fine tune my comp monitor.

young gun...

i have gamma control in my NLE...you can run color bars on the DVX and output them to your computer or your NLE might have color bars. once you find them then follow this guide...

Color Bars

There are a number of sources on the net for how to do color bar calibration.
http://www.greatdv.com/video/smptebars.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_bars

Your DVX can generate a colorbar at the flip of a switch. Check your manual for details.
Most editing software comes with color bars or can generate. FCP -> Effects -> Video Generator

On a Mac go to System Prefs -> Displays -> Color -> Calibrate and step through with the advanced settings. Gamma is one of the settings you'll deal with.

A very simple view is that gamma is like the contrast control. It affects how all the midtone grays are displayed.

If all the different display devices are calibrated correctly you should get fairly consistent results and the devices should be reasonably close. Note that some of the deviced (like the org DVX viewfinder) have a limited range of controls. Also LCD's will have a bit different response than CRT's. The idea is to get them as close as possible and then note and compensate for any minor differences.
