24p how-to question

I haven't had a chance to tackle progressive (24p or 30p) very much. The stuff I had to do in the past as always been 60i. I've tried toying with 24p a few times, but it appears way to strobby when monitored from the analog output of the camera.

I have seen 24p material shot with a DVX before, so obviously, I'm not doing things right; that's a given. I suppose Barry Green's book and DVD covers this from glass to glass? Any other insights?

Flintstone, you have the DVX100 and you're not shooting 24P or 24PA.

One thing, when you shoot 24p don't forget to use it like a movie camera, use a tripod and be very carefull in handheld (best result when use with an handheld device like the Glidecam).

Also, your pan have to be very slow particularly when you are in telephoto with the zoom.(turn off OIS for panning).

EX: At 4.5 a panning of 10 sec. for 90°
At 11 a panning of 25 sec. for 90°
At 40 a panning of 90 sec. for 90°

You can find a lot of information on anything about 24P if you do a search. Don't wait any longer.

Yeah! Outrageous, isn't it? I just never got around to it. I've been pretty busy doing marketing and demo videos with scan converted material lately. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a 24p capable scan converter. So I've been putting it off. :embarasse

Oh! And thanks for the tips.

I wonder if adding some sort of motion blur would help ease the judder. But then it may unsharp portions that must stay sharp. Or shooting 1/24th is good enough?

Yes, it will help but you will loose some sharpness. Regular speed will be 1/48 (default) like movie camera.

You shouldn't have to use motion blur or shoot at 1/24 second with this camera. That will just degrade your footage. If you are shooting 24pA it will look stroby on an NTSC monitor unless you remove the pulldown. Try capturing your footage, removing the pulldown and then burning a 24p DVD, you will be pleasantly surprised.

Stefan,
Pulldown doesn't help "smoothing" the strobe for NTSC monitor adding fields between full frames ?

Fred,
If you final output is video and you don't like the strobe, try recording at 30P, it will minimize it and won't look like video.

It’s actually the 2:3:3:2 pulldown that 24pA is recorded with that MAKES it look more stuttery than 2:3 pulldown would when played back directly from the tape.

But it’s also the nature of 24p to be a little bit stroby, exactly like film is. When shooting 24p, you need to treat the camera like it’s a film camera. No quick pans or zooms.
